Elastics question..

#1 Post by claire88 »

Hi,

I went for my first adjustment today and I got elastics, I have to wear them 24/7.
I was wondering though, if I removed them when I go on nights out with my friends, for say 10ish hours about once a week, would this delay the process majorly or just a bit? I know that I wont be comfortable or enjoy my night with the elastics in place but don't want to slow the treatment down majorly, so i dont know what to do :(

I would observe your ortho's instructions re elastics wear. You'll soon forget about them when you're out in public.

Well, you should just try them out! You will become used to them after a while!

Probably the only not comfortable situation you will have with the elastics is your mouth being dry. It really isn't uncomfortable and you can barely see that you have them on.

thanks for your replies and help.
I will be wearing them 24/7 for day to day life, it's just when I got out with friends for drinks/socialising i'd prefer not to be wearing the elastics, but I only got them today, so hopefully in a few more days i'll feel more comfortable with them :)

I just got elastics too, and so far I have not worn them to work because I have to talk a lot, and I find it hard to talk with the elastics in. I don't want to sound like I'm drunk or something! I think it's getting better though, so maybe I will give it a go tomorrow.

You may also find, as I have, that if you take your elastics out for a while they will hurt more when you put them back in.

my advice. just get over it, in the nicest possible way. :)
seriously, youll set yourself back and in the end youll have to wear braces for longer and who wants that really?
I have a total of 6 elastics in my mouth (24 hours a day)- only 2 are visible- but hardly- they are right at the sides of my mouth. People get used to them, they really dont care. Youll probably even find, if you are like me that 3/4 of your friends have already had braces and have had to go through it too, so they will understand.
goodluck
oh yehand they also hurt ALOT if you stop wearing them for too long when you put them back in.

I have a very noticable elastic configuration (2 upside down triangles on each side) and I only take them out to eat and brush my teeth. However, I did take them out for my brother's wedding, as I did not want them to be seen in pictures. Let me tell you, it hurt that evening to put them back in! I would do as your ortho says. I've had mine for 4 months, and yes people notice them, but they lose interest once I explain why I am wearing them.

Good luck! You won't notice them after awhile.

I've just had elastics put on - canines from top to bottom. They are white which I thought would be fairly discreet, but now I realise I look as if I have two streams of spit dangling between my upper and lower set of teeth...
I wonder if elastics come in any other colours or would it then look as if I had bits of spinach etc dangling?
The things they don't warn you about...!

You guys/gals really need to follow your treatment plan according to your ortho's requests. This is an expensive process that should not be taken lightly. If there is a requirement that you wear elastics 24/7, then you should do so.

A former member of AW had elastics in various colours. Hers were class III and they looked OK.
