How can I make wax stick to a quad helix??!!

#1 Post by cosmicgirl »

I was fitted with a quad helix this morning and my tongue is suffering!! Have tried squishing on bits of wax, but they keep dropping off or moving to a non-irritating part.
Any suggestions gratefully received!

I had a bihelix which looks a lot like a quad helix. I didn't think it would hurt my tongue until my 2nd or 3rd day. I was crying. By this time I could no longer speak and used hand signals. I tried to put wax in certain areas and it did not work.It kept slipping off I went in for an emergency appt to my dentist and she just gave me some of her topical anesthesia to take home. The sides of my tongue were RAW and shredded. Finally after like 10 days I finally found the exact spot that was causing the cuts. I dried the area of the wire/bihelix and then was able to put big globs of wax. I was spending about $15 a month on wax and that's a lot folks! Especially when it only cost $1.69 for a 2 pk of dental wax.

After about 2 days of putting on globs of wax , Iwas able to speak and eat. I was soooo happy that I kept using these big globs of wax for 7 months! Yes I had the bihelix on for a little over 7 months . The ortho first estimated about 3 months.

I've gone through soooo much during my treatment so far that my ortho always tells me " I know you've been through so much" but the worst for me was the Bihelix. When they finally took it off I wanted to yank his arm and was in tears because my molars were still very wobbly. The ortho actually gave me 2 weeks without bottom braces because he saw how much pain I was in :)

I gotta tell you one thing . The discomfort was totally worth it. My molars are no longer severely tilted and are now upright.
All I can say is hang in there,it might seem to take forever but it works.

Thanks Gennel! I'm going through packs of wax as if there's no tomorrow, but maybe I ought to put bigger blobs on so they stay put!

Thanks Meryaten - will keep it in mind should I get through my ortho's entire stocks this week!
I'm just having trouble getting it to stick and stay! It keeps bunching up and ending up on the non irritating top part, lodged betwixt palate and wire AAAGH!

Hi,

I am having the same issue. I just fitted with a bihelix 3 days ago and have only been able to eat very soft food. I don't like the taste of the wax my doctor gives for free and it always comes off. Does anyone know of a good plyable wax out on the market. Also, what can I place on my tongue. It has at least one pronounce straight line across and it is becoming painful when eating. Also, I am having a hard time speaking to the point I would rather chat online then speak through the phone. Please help??? :soremouth:

hi all,i have had a quad helix fitted since last April and it was most uncomfortable at the start but believe me your tongue will toughen up and not hurt as much. what i find great is Listerine mouthwash its just brilliant keeps all bacteria at bay therefore keeps pain away also.quad helix braces are a nuisance to start with but do a great job. my ortho is leaving mine in during all my treatment as it acts as a form of retainer also.

i don't know if i have a quad helix but about 6 months ago the bracket band around my back molar was cutting up in the inside of my tounge... SO PAINFUL

i told the doc and he shaved the metal down so it no longer was cuttting my tounge, i dont know if that will work in your case though
