Water Pik

#1 Post by Beckalicious »

Does/has anyone had better luck with a water pik getting everything out of their braces than traditional floss? Please let me know which water piks are great use for braces as well as portible for travel. I want to make sure I get my water pik before I get my braces on so it will be less of a struggle for me. Right now the way my teeth are, it's hard to floss in general. Thanks.

I'd also like to know if there is anyone from Australia who has one and where they bought it from, is there an online site? I have emailed the link of waterpik.com.au but no reply

Thanks

Hey Guys,
Check out the Dental Do-dads section of the forum. There are tons of great recommendations there, and info about where people bought stuff.

Waterpiks are great, I love mine.

Thank you for your replys! I have done some searching and went onto waterpik.com, and found a small portable one since I have a small bathroom with limited space in it. It will also be great for travel. I appreciate you all letting me know which ones you have or where to find them. Given I'm trying to get my braces on in a month or so, I feel like there's so many things I'll need like wax, morgan bumper to put on over my braces incase wax doesn't work, and also so I don't cut my hubby's mouth when I kiss him while trying to get used to my braces (eventhough he doesn't mind if I do cut him with them, however I won't torture him that way), getting the Dentakit, and tons of wax so I don't run out. Please let me know if there's anything else I may have missed which will be essentials for braces. I always keep the chapstick in my purse, and today when they needed to take the pictures at my last consultation (the Ortho I'm going with) she was nice enough to ask if I needed carmex before using the lip/cheek separators. I'll defanitely make sure plenty of advil is in my purse as carrying water with me so they won't bother me that much once they're on. Thanks all for your replys. I greatly appreciate it.

I love my waterpik! :D I bought it at Target. It's definitely a great buy. I use it right after eating to wash out all the food stuck in my braces but you should also make sure to floss each day too.

I bought the Waterpik Ultra ( the newest portable model ) from Amazon and had it shipped via a shipping service to Singapore. I also ordered a plug type voltage converter (since US voltage is 110V and Singapore voltage is 220V).

It works great ... after I got the hang of using it :)

I got the newest waterpik from my parents for xmas! (right after i was braced!) I love it... i have a nance that sits in the roof of my mouth, and it helps me clean it out, and it cleans in between my back molar bands really well. I recommend it, but they say its not a replacement for flossing, but I hate flossing lol!! Good luck!
December 12, 2007- Paritally Braced, left canine back in all two brackets, nance and both bands.

Beckalicious, don't forget that the water pik is not a substitution for regular floss. I love my water pik but I have found that regular floss does the best job! For short travel, I usually bring along my sonicare and floss. I bought the travel water pik because I am running out of bathroom counter space due to my sonicare charger, water pik flosser, tooth brush holder for my manual brushes and proxabrushes, soap, toothpastes, hairbrushes, hair iron, and cup to hold my misc. stuff. I have to keep the superfloss and glide floss, wax, and refills for everything in the medicine cabinet. Regular floss is great, it gets under the gumline where you don't want to point the waterpik flow.
Upper and lower 1st premolars extracted
Uppers braced 4/6/07 & Lowers braced 4/20/07
ceramic brackets and rectangular arch wires
Est. term: 30-36 months
De-banded: 3/04/09 w/ LBR and U&L Essix

I'm so glad I bought a Waterpik. This is essential, In my opinion, to have while under treatment. It washes away all of the food debris in not time. I uses it daily. And I only payed $29 bucks for it. I have the rechargeable one.

My ortho said that I can use it and don't have to floss. I loved flossing before braces, but now I can't stand it, so I'm going to get by with regular cleanings and the water pik. I use several attachments and I believe I'm doing a thorough job without floss.

I have just purchased the portable one, initially for clearing my extraction sites of food debris and when i get my brace fitted,

now its working fine i just under estimated its power, before putting it in my mouth i pressed the button and ended up squirting 9 ft down the hallway and all up the wall mirror and ceiling, if you can imagine the fireman and his hose scenario of it out of control that was me, realising that the on button wasnt the off button as well.

I then plucked up courage to put it in my mouth and it nearly took my head off, i mean seriously powerful, even with the low pressure head on. I went over my extraction site of about 8 days old and it made it bleed, so will wait until i get my braces on before i start using it properly

tis a messy bit of kit maybe theres a nack to it, i aint found it yet though,

make sure you are using the low pressure tip on the portable waterpik first and mix your water with salt, so in case you do get a little swelling or soreness you will be treating the area with salt water. Also dont apply the water too close to your gumline. It can cause damage. If you want to slowly get use to using a waterpik, dont charge it all the way so then you wont get the full power of a the waterpik until you know how to manage it. Also, i found it helpful to use warm water instead of cold water ( not a big shock to my gums in the morning and at night).

Out of all the advise the best is to use warm salt water in your waterpik while trying to get use to it. you may have to run it for a short time to make sure the heads are clean and not clogged up.

It took me awhile to get used to it, but now I keep a portable in my office at work and one at home ( especially for those days at work when I have a quick lunch and cant seems to brush all the gunk out of my braces)

Hope this helps a little bit :)
