Ouch kittymeow - that sounds awful. What braces do you have?

It seems as though the spacers pain does wear off after a bit though, hope you don't have to wait long for that to happen for you so you feel better soon.

The ortho said that now braces are bonded onto the teeth, they no longer need spacers or molar bands. Not quite sure I had got that bit right but it was something along those lines.
Hi Meryaten

Thats probably why I wasn't sure I'd understood it right then! Knowing me I imagine I got muddled with something else he was telling me...sigh!

OH GOD NOT THE METAL ONES. I couldn't get any of the rubber ones in so I had all metal 4 on the top and 4 on the bottom. After 5 days the metal one shifted so I was able to get one rubber one which is heaven compared to the metal, they feel like little staples in your mouth. You literally can't eat, helps you lose weight though haha. Seriously though after those little suckers you can handle anything coming up for the braces. My heart goes out to you all with spacers. Thank god it's only a week.

As a small ray of hope to those reading this thread and cringing, I had my spacers put in yesterday and haven't found them at all painful.

They used rubber spacers and my molars are fairly tight together, so they had to jam fairly hard to get them in. And I'm a baby about pain.

So, you may luck out!

I had 4 rubber spacers and 4 metal spacers last week. Thought I was done w/spacers for good today BUT 2 of the lower molar bands could not be put on, so, guess what?? UGH! 2 metal spacer are back in WITH all my other bands and brackets.

They remind me of mini safety pins or something you might want through an eyebrow for "art" but not something that should be installed in between your teeth. :-(* Crazy device.

alright I did not have metal spacers, just the little blue ones. And the first two days weren't that bad but after that for the next 4 it was torture. (Who invents these torture devices anyway? ) Anyway I was really lucky I got to keep mine in for 2 weeks because I had to go in for an extraction and my ortho wanted to wait a week after that to give the extraction some time to heal. God I wish I would have only had them for a week.

So how do the molar bands compare to spacers??

Because they obviously have thickness too - is it as bad as the spacers or can you completely forget about them?

So sick of not being able to chew. Thank goodness I get the braces on tomorrow.

The molar bands are a totally different kind of feeling to the spacers. With the spacers all of my teeth were in pain and I couldn't chew at all. With molar bands they cut up the inside of your cheek till you are used to them and these cleat things on the inside cut up your tongue. Eating still isn't all it's cracked up to me with the molar bands in but its not painful to my teeth anymore, just my tongue and cheeks. Also when I bite down it feels like I am chewing on metal although that might be because my molar bands aren't all the way down or something. But all in all I really do believe spacers are 10 times worse then molar bands! Your cheeks toughen up and you get used to them. Everything I eat somehow gets shoved behind them so its already alot of swishing water and I dont even have braces yet lol.

Kitty - Molar bands aren't anything at all to worry about. They can chew up your cheeks, but they are not as torturous to you as the spacers. but like twinjoy said learning to eat again has proven to be quite the challenge. And getting used to food being stucj in your braces, well I don't know I will get used to it but it's not that scary.
