make sure you are using the low pressure tip on the portable waterpik first and mix your water with salt, so in case you do get a little swelling or soreness you will be treating the area with salt water. Also dont apply the water too close to your gumline. It can cause damage. If you want to slowly get use to using a waterpik, dont charge it all the way so then you wont get the full power of a the waterpik until you know how to manage it. Also, i found it helpful to use warm water instead of cold water ( not a big shock to my gums in the morning and at night).
Out of all the advise the best is to use warm salt water in your waterpik while trying to get use to it. you may have to run it for a short time to make sure the heads are clean and not clogged up.
It took me awhile to get used to it, but now I keep a portable in my office at work and one at home ( especially for those days at work when I have a quick lunch and cant seems to brush all the gunk out of my braces)
The QuickBreeze attaches right to your water faucet. It's removeable and small so storage isn't a problem for me. It also allows you to control the water pressure with your faucets instead of battery or electric power. There's no danger of running out of water or having to refill a resevoir. You can't use saltwater to run it but I've found warm water works just fine.
The appliance slips right off the faucet when you're done- you just tug it off. It attaches to any water faucet so I can go anywhere with it. Using the irrigator takes some getting used to but I've got brackets that sit right on my gum line so I need it to get to the places that brushing and floss won't.[/url]

I was looking at getting this but noticed most talk about having a waterpik, I don't really want a travel one just a quiet one that I can use in my house. I get up very early in the morning and my kids go to sleep way before me so this one sounds best. If anyone has any experience with one of these please let me know how it fares.
Waterpiks are also excellent for removing debris wedged between powerchains and brackets. I removed a lot of food bits last night using my portable one and that was after brushing and flossing.
