Ceramic or Metal Brackets?
Moderator: bbsadmin
I'm getting braces next month and after a fair bit of thought I've decided to go for all metal, although my ortho assured me that ceramics would not increase the treatment time in my case the deciding factors were;

On a seperate note about what your mum said I just don't believe there is an age when people should think the appearance of their teeth is not worth changing if they want to. I'm 32 but I think even people in their retirement look a lot better with a healthy set of teeth and if your teeth need braces it may help other problems / future problems with bite issues, hygiene, overcrowding etc.
- I read that it can be troublesome to have ceramics on the bottom and I don't like the idea of two different types, I do smile big sometimes and so both would show, which I think I would be self conscious about.
I like the fact the metal brackets are a little bit smaller
Knowing me I'll want silly coloured ligs and so is there any point going for discreet braces?
I think I'll be (even more) self conscious about having food trapped in my braces with white braces
I don't like the idea of people staring at my ceramic braces wondering what the heck they are and then me having to explain, with metal it's obvious
Metal braces are I think that little bit cooler
I like the idea of not trying to hide that I've got braces
My ortho will have more experience with metal ones due to the nature of his practice.
For me ceramics would have cost £400 more
My teeth are hardly very white, my canines in particular are quite yellow, I think ceramics look better on people with better coloured teeth whereas metals distract when your teeth aren't so white.
And finally, having asked him...
My hubbie prefers the look of metals and he's going to be looking at them more than I am! unless I sit looking into a mirror all the time, which is quite possible in the first week I get them but after then hopefully the novelty of staring at myself with the new hardware will have worn off

I have ceramic uppers and am due to get ceramic lowers at a later stage. my ortho didn't mention anything about longer time in braces or chipping my front teeth off them. They cost me 500euro more than metal but they are worth it for me. I wouldn't have got braces if I had to go for full metal- I admire those who do but I was so insecure about my teeth already I didn't want to draw more attention to them.
People have stared at them trying to figure out what they are, but it usually ends with "hey you got braces!!" which means they couldn't really see them in the first place. Some of my friends actually said how great it was that I only had to get one metal bar across my teeth instead of "traintracks" and I have had to point out the brackets stuck to my teeth!

I will probably end up in all metal because like, elpi, I smile REALLY big! I think you will be able to see both the tops and bottoms and they won't put ceramic on both.
I am reallly excited that I finally made a definite decision! My tops are basically straight and if it weren't for my bite being off on my right side, I would have gotten invisalign for the bottoms. I know I am making the right choice, I am just a little nervous about it.

I have the Ceramic the only reason for the choice was that I knew I would be getting married in the course of my treatment and I wanted the option of something less noticeable...
No one ever stares at my teeth to figure out what I have but I always get bright colors...and the only ones who ever look are people who also have braces...I think when they band us we all get tooth obsessed because I never looked at anyones teeth before ..
It's just a matter of what you are more comfortable in..all styles do the same thing..
When I first met with my orthro he gave me the fake teeth with the different braces on them and let me touch them and look at them to help me pick a style.
As for cleaning and care the ceramics I have no problem with them they dont seem too bulky to me but I've never worn the metal ones...

I don't think I will have anything major in the next year other than the Air Force Ball and graduation from college. I have like six classes left and should graduate around November!
I don't mind going to the ball with braces, although I am scared I will look like a teenager! I was in a play a couple of years ago and people really thought that I was still in high school, so I can only imagine what I will look like in braces!
My ortho said that adults have to specifically ask for metal brackets on the top. I wish I could somhow figure out a way to see myself in both!
But what fun would that be?........lol

I was very happy with my all-metal brackets and had some fun with colored ligatures along the way, I'm actually kind of sad that the fun is over. I have two co-workers still in braces, one with all metal like me and one with ceramics, and I have to say I think the ceramics and trying to "hide" the braces just looks funny to me. But to each their own, she is very happy with her ceramics and so-called discreetness. The other with all-metal is a guy who doesn't really care what people think of his appearance, lol. (he looks great!)

All Metal Uppers and Lowers - brackets placed with OrthoCAD
Braces on 2/1/2007, Removed 2/13/2008, now in Essix retainers.
When I was younger I always thought guys with braces were cute! My mom used to laugh at me. She still thinks I am crazy for the braces. I drink a lot of soda now and will give that up when I get them.....so I figure the payment will almost equal out! Sad but true!SnowSara wrote: The other with all-metal is a guy who doesn't really care what people think of his appearance, lol. (he looks great!)
I have always respected adults with braces because to me they are being proactive and I know what kind of dedication it takes to have beautiful teeth!
HAHA I know what you mean! I recently decided I wanted bangs so I got the choppy across the forehead bangs...and I think that with the braces is makes me look too young...when I go out to drink with my friends I'm the *only* one to get carded (I'm 28!) and they stare at my ID and then at me like they don't believe it..Bekah wrote: I don't mind going to the ball with braces, although I am scared I will look like a teenager! I wish I could switch to the metal braces after my wedding cuz they were about 500 bucks cheaper

I think if there was a prices difference this would be a non issue. I would go with the metal all over! I was just second guessing cause the ortho uses ceramic on most adults and because of my mom!
I am 32 and still get carded without braces! I would say I look around 25. But maybe that is just wishful thinking!!! lol

I don't know what happened!
