can this be done?

#1 Post by suetemi »

I had a molar extracted years ago, and the ones behind it has tilted forward. There is some bone loss where the extracted tooth used to be.

I know that some people get teeth extracted and the gap is closed with braces. However, is it possible to close a gap for an extraction that was done years ago? Since bone rebuilds itself along the way, if the teeth were moved to close the gap, wouldn't the area with bone loss regenerate due to the teeth being moved in?

Has anyone been in braces with tilted teeth, and if so, what happens to those teeth in braces, i.e., does the ortho stand them upright, do they stay tilted but move position, etc?

Thanks!

I, too am curious about the first question, as I lost one of my molars about 8 years ago after a failed root canal. That empty section of gum is much narrower than the rest of my gums. I know the tooth in front of it needs to come back into that space. I'm afraid it's not going to be enough tissue/bone to support the moved tooth!!

well my ortho seems to thing so as thats is hopefully what is about to happen to my molar.........

I have had gap there for longer than I can remember and I am now 51. Molar band has just ( 8 days ago) been put on back molar at top to bring it forward so its not on its lonesome at the back...... especially when my lower jaw gets moved forward with surgery and it will be left redundant.

So sorry personally not far along enough to properly answer your question .. but it looks as if its possible !

Hmm good question. I too have two molar extractions ,one on each side and I assumed that the ortho would close those gaps but NOPE that didnt happen.I'm not sure if my 2nd molars on the bottom can be moved forward and close the gap because my bite would not work properly...
I also have some bone loss one of those extractions .As far as I know Bone does not regenerate, however if your tooth is moved (the surrounding bone will slowly move along with it ) The only option given to me by my ortho, dentist and oral surgeon is to possibly get a bonegraft on one of those old extractions and get an implant. I won't need a bonegraft on the other side. I don't have that option because the cost is like$2,500 for one implant! so 2 implants $5,000 not including a bonegraft that costs around $400 & up
