Have braces stopped you

#1 Post by dimplez23 »

I'm just curious if anyone has stopped a bad habit since getting braces? As for me it definetly has....I used to be an obsessive nail biter! I would never be able to let my nails grow out and now they are long and beautiful!!! I've also stopped chewing gum which was another habit I had but I think I've developed a new one....smiling with my mouth open!!! :o

3/4/08- 4 molar bands & 8 spacers
3/8/08- 4 premolars pulled
3/11/08- WIRES put on!! Ouuch! & 4 more molar bands
3/18/08- TPA put on and a lower lingual arch Torture Time -30 months

ME TOO!!! I am a compulsive nail biter...so bad that I'd bite all the way down till it hurt!! I just got braced on the 7th and even though I tried I coudn't bite my nails. It's feels awkward so I just don't do it. I haven't done it since brace day.
And I also have developed the BIG WIDE SMILE syndrome (I notice that most people in braces smile extra wide). I never smiled with my teeth showing but it's like the braces force my mouth open when I smile.

So far the worst habit I have given up has been drinking almost a 12 pack of soda a day! Soda was costing me about what my husband's cigarettes were costing!

I am terrified of acid wear on my teeth so I just gave it up!

I can't bite my nails anymore. But I still pick at my cuticles which just makes it worse, so now I have to carry clippers around. I now floss everyday, and I never used to before.

I used to be a nail biter too. And I'd bite the skin around my nails...eww! :? I've been braced for almost 2 months and since I can't bite my nails, they look awesome!! Money well spent....LOL!
Keep smilin'! :)

also - ive lost and kept off 12 pounds! not sure how or why, but i'm very glad

I, too, used to drink 2 or 3 sodas a day. Last May I decided to give them up, and I haven't touch it since. 8)

I forgot to say I was drinking diet soda! Diet Dr. Pepper to be specific! I feel ever so much better now that I don't drink it anymore!

Ah, that does make a difference. I never understood the dangers of diet soda, except for enamel damage I suppose. I still drink them and probably always will (love Coke Zero), but I don't have them often; maybe 1 can a day, 2 times a week if I'm lucky. That sparsely separated probably doesn't do much damage...I hope.

Hi Dimplez (does this mean you have are a fellow member of the dimples club? :) )

I don't have braces yet, but I am really really really hoping that it breaks my awful habit of picking, then biting, the skin on either side of my thumb nails! My boyfriend hates it, especially the times when I pick it so much that it makes them raw  It's one of those habits that I don't realise I am doing half the time either, until it's too late. I have managed to stop for about 6 months once, and they healed up so nicely, but then the winter weather makes them dry, and the temptation to pick away is too strong :-+

Since seeing my ortho, I have been making a real effort to stop myself doing it. One of the main reasons is that the ortho pointed out that I have a very thin edge to my left top central incisor, and if I keep 'nibbling' with it, I will wear it down even more. I'm hoping that when I get braces I will feel too uncomfortable to nibble, and I will be able to break this cycle once and for all.

Yes I have dimples and I've read a lot of stories about people getting dimples after they have had braces so maybe mine might get deeper or even less noticeable (which I do not want).

Well I, like a lot of people here, would pick at my skin, bite my nails until they hurt, it was awful! Now everything is much different and I hope that I dont go back to that old habit once my braces are removed . My ortho told me the same thing, he said that I HAD to stop biting my nails or else I would break the brackets and that it was bad for my teeth.

sksk11 I hope that once you get braced that it will also stop because it really is a bad habit...ive noticed other people doing it and I think to myself, is that what I looked like?

Good Luck!!!
