My wife's clicky jaw

#1 Post by mikecl »

My wife, Kathryn has an extremely clicky jaw and on the odd occasion it has been known to stick and lock a little (is that a problem I hear you ask ?)

I have mentioned this to my ortho and he is happy to chat about the potential causes and possible treatments and Kathryn will be seeing him shortly to speak to him about it.

However, I just wondered if anyone else has experienced any similar problems and if so, what treatment, if any, was undertaken.

Cheers

Mike

Hi Mike -

I took a quick peek at your story - and saw your pics. Your braces look great - do you know what brand ceramics you have?

Sorry - I really came here to respond to your post about your wife!

I've experienced that a few times many, many years ago. It seemed to go away on its own. However, since I have suffered from TMJ for the last few years I am always asked if my jaw has locked up on me an I reply no - then clarified maybe a few times a LONG time ago and no one thought much of it. I do think that locking can be cause for concern in that it can be due to TMJD - temporomandibular joint disorder.

Lots written about it on the internet but lots not really known about it as well.

Some info here;

Hope this helps!

I finally became pain free and am now getting braces to fix my horrendous bite - it is thought my TMJ issues resulted duee to my bad bite which was severely altered in the last 2 years - why, no one knows!

Beth

Thanks for the response and I've no idea what brand my ceramic brackets are to be honest.

Thanks too for attaching those links and I will read the information posted on the websites.

It may be that Kathryn does have a bad bite and it would certainly be interesting to see her reaction if the ortho believed that braces would be help solve her problems

All the best

How cool would that be if you were both in braces huh? If I were her, I would definitely go for it.

I'm 42 and had braces as a kid. Getting ready for my 2nd attempt in a few weeks. Though things sure have changed since my first experience - - I am nervous and a bit fearful. If my boyfriend would agree to get braces I would be THRILLED! But he has no reason to get them -he has perfect top teeth and slightly crooked lowers, but certainly no reason to get them. :) I just think it would be fun and less scary to go through it with my significant other. I worry about kissing him etc -but he has absolutely no reservations about it and is very very supportive of my doing this. And I've suffered with a bad bite and resulting jaw issues/pain for 2 years - the jaw pain finally calmed down so it is time for me to fix this horrendous bite of mine and he knows that is best for me healthwise, longterm.

Keep us posted on what the ortho says!

Take care - Beth

When I was first braced, my jaw clicked constantly and occasionaly got "stuck" sometimes too. It was at the very least to say annoying. My orthodontist didn't seem worried by it and never really told me what he was going to do to fix it. Now that I'm at the end of my treatment, my jaw doesn't click at all anymore and feels 100% better than before.
I'm guessing it had something to do with the way my bite was, and that was corrected using elastics.

Hope this helps!

Good luck to you! :)

My bite will be corrected with elastics too - my ortho said a lot will change for the better for me. No more grinding, better speech, no more jaw pain, WAY better chewing, straight teeth etc etc.
Can't wait!
