Braces still hurt

#1 Post by rmogen »

I just got braces 2 months ago, and I still can't chew or bite with my front teeth. is this normal? Will this be the way it is for the next four years or will it get better? I've had one adjustment about 2 weeks ago and another one in 2 weeks.

I'm 1 month in and having the same problem. :? I can't wait for my front teeth to feel normal again. I'm tired of having to cut everything up.

You really have a 4 year treatment plan?

I didn't feel comfortable biting with my front teeth for almost a year. The teeth were moving so were either tender or loose.

It does get better. Hang in there.

Thanks Guys I appreciate it. They are starting to feel a little better, I was able to eat a soft taco today so I was happy about that.

Yeah I really do have a 4 year treatment plan (44 months) I have severe TMJ, and my Jaw is extremely misaligned with also a ldouble lower mandibular dislocation, so I had extractions and surgery and now need to pull eveyrhting together. Ortho said 36-44 months, so I'm just assuming 48 months better to have long expecttaions and get off sooner.

I have had braces for over 5 months and my teeth still ache quite a bit. Some days are worse than others and often, yogurt or liquids are the best things I can eat!

If you can't bite down because of pain, have you tried taking things for it? If you can't chew or grind, see your doctor so something can be adjusted so you can eat better. Remember you can actually bite some things with your molars too, as I learned quite early on

A couple things you might want to find out though: Are you still able to chew and grind, or is this only about being able to bite down with your front teeth? Are you eating solid foods regularly now? Have you been taking over the counters to help with inflammation and pain? Are your front teeth were a lot of the correction needs to be done? Are you in elastics? Are you more sensitive to pain in general/ have an overall low pain tolerance? Each factor might contribute to your perception of the pain.

This might sound harsh, but working through the pain (to some degree) is just part of the process. The first couple of months are the hardest as your jaw cells are rebuilding etc... so the pain might be the worst then, so my ortho told me. May pain has changed a lot after the first few months, but it is still there --- I just have to work through it.

This is me as well. But it's only been about 8 days. I'm learning to chew on my back teeth though. I dont think they've ever had this much work.

Thanks for the advice. I actually have a very high pain threshold, and I have been chewing. I figured out the problem. I have an underdevloped tooth in the front, that has weak roots, and that is the one that I can't bite with. SO I've learned to bite on the other side of my front and I'm good. Thanks to all.

Glad you found a solution :D

i found i could eat pretty normally about a week after being braced, but even now i still have the occasional tender tooth. Getting back to eating asap is the best thing for your teeth and after every adjustment ive only ever allowed myself 48 hours max before chewing again. :D (apart from after surgery 10 weeks and no chewing  )
