Turbo Stops
Decided to get braces at almost 50 and was braced yesterday - am now thinking what have I done to myself. Has anyone had something called turbo stops? Mine look like little metal ski ramps on the backs of each of my two front teeth. This is to avoid the bottom fronts from being able to slide up behind the upper fronts (wearing thin and would also knock off my bottom braces - traditional metal). I was told these would be there for a least 8 months. Now none of my teeth close together - except the two bottom ones that rest on the turbo stops (the uppers get quite sore from the pressure) but I find I am having difficult eating with this situation since I can't really chew on anything - am having to eat what I can swallow without much chewing. Anyone had this and have any food suggestions or solutions? I am planning a cruise in 4 months and am really concerned about what if anything I will be able to eat. I'm a thin person so it isn't like I need to lose weight - I need to be able to keep it on. Any comments and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Chrisd had these exact things on his teeth. Not sure if he still does... he hasn't posted in a while that I've noticed. Here's a link to his story. The picture is a few posts down on this page:

You will get used to them and be able to eat normally by the time you go on your cruise...I'm fairly sure of this.

I hate Turbo things!!
I just got my Damon braces yesterday and they had to put the Turbo Stops (they called them Turbo Bites) on my top front 2 teeth. They are extremely annoying. I'm also having problems eating because of the fact that my back molars don't touch. Not to mention I now have a lisp, lol. I asked my ortho how long I'd have to wear them and he said maybe 2 months. I hope it's not longer than that. I really hate these things!

I've had a bite turbo and molar build ups for 6 weeks now. I can't say I'm eating quite normally, but yes, I am eating and getting somewhat used to them. It's just a bit of an annoyance now.
By the way, I chose "Ollie" as my avatar, not because of my teeth, but because the bite turbo I have is on the back of my front, left tooth, and that's what it felt like initially. Like I had this big snaggletooth sticking out -- even though the turbo actually stuck into my mouth and nobody could see it -- it felt huge!

i just had turbos put on (with braces) Feb 12. they really bite, and not in a good way. i cant' imagine ever being able to eat normally until my molars touch again.
i just cut everything up so i can swallow it whole. the food processor looks like it will be an important fixture in my life. Boca burger? no problem! indian naan? no problem! TEXLADY, could you ask the cruise kitchen to food process stuff for you? i guess that might be too much to ask...
just go slow & make sure everyone around you knows the heimlich maneuver.

Turbos
Ha..seems like nobody is enjoying the Turbo Stops. I can't imagine why.... I also had my braces put on February 12. I got up this morning and could actually eat bread! Lol! I feel like I've had a breakthrough. But I did throw a SlimFast in the fridge for backup just in case.
And by the way, I like the snaggletooth comment. I know the feeling. It's like rabbit teeth in the back of your teeth. Did they tell y'all how long you might have to wear the Turbos?

bite turbos
I just got my damon braces in with 2 bite turbos behind my front two teeth. they suck!! i can't eat! i love eating too! my will to live is gone. and my ortho guy said that they would be on the whole time (15 mos.). Does anyone have any suggestions on how to go about relearning how to eat with these things on? cause although it's a great diet (the forced kind), i don't want to eat soup and milkshakes for 15 mos.!
I don't have turbos, and from the sounds of things I should count myself lucky! But I have had times when my back teeth wouldn't touch at all, so chewing was not an option. Even macaroni and cheese was difficult to eat! Soup was hard, too. The broth went down okay, but the chunky stuff was another story. The closest I could come to chewing was to mush my food between my tongue and the roof of my mouth. I got tired of mashed potatoes and Cream of Wheat...

dfvalent,
i have been eating with the turbos for almost 3 months now, and i am happy to report these days i don't use my food processor any more than i did pre-braces. i am a foodie but i eat much of what i ate before. the only thing i can't eat is tough or chewy things that must be bitten off like a sandwich on a crusty bread. i do eat other types of sandwiches & i do eat *slices* of crusty bread (much to my orto's chagrin).
i have to admit that you get less flavor when you cannot grind the food with your molars, especially with veggies. veggies are the toughest. i must mince, mince, mince before i eat. i often travel (locally) with a steak knife, keep a steak knife at work, & i carry a plastic knife in my purse. plastic knives do better than you might think with veggies. i don't eat meat (except fish and that is easy, mostly) so i don't know how a plastic knife w ill work with meat.
good luck. you will adjust, trust me.
