Adult Males and Females wearing Braces

#1 Post by Frenchsmile »

What are the most annoying or positive comments you got from Males / Females / Children / Teenagers regarding your look with Braces ?

I have been wearing braces for 3 years and people stare at me with

"my heavy metal smile" ?

Thanks for your comments

My husband says they look cute and that people are going to think our almost 5 year old son is my little brother. The girls at work (I work in the dental feild) say I look like a new high school intern. It's all in fun though, and it's funny to me! (I have a really broad spectrum sense of humor!)

Ceramic lowers are the only think on display. I have been surprised by how many people have noticed them! I can't say I'm one for noticing people's bottom teeth! But yes, some people have noticed really quickly!

Younger people, early thirties, twenties and below, seem on the whole a lot more accepting of adults and braces. Where I work a fairly run down area, dentistry isn't high on people's priorities, a couple of people asked about the cost - but I asked them how many cigarettes they smoked a day, and worked out how long they would have to quit for to get their teeth fixed!

I got some compliments but for the most part it seemed not many people noticed. The most common were, "Your braces are so cute!" and "How long have you had braces?". Or a story about their own braces. That's about it.

I just got them off in February but it seems like ages ago! Time flies.

My 5 yr old niece asked "What are those on your teeth? Braces? Why did you got them? Will they be on forever? How many minutes is that? " Don't you love have kids ask things so innocently and get past and present tense all confused. I get people who have braces asking me how much mine cost, how long have I had them and how much longer will I need them. I've also had comments from friends who have had them asking how much longer and if my teeth are pretty sore after adjustments. One of my good friends recently commented that he forgot what I looked like without braces.

Kids have this knack of blurting the obvious (in this case the presence of braces on my teeth) at the most inopportune moment. On more than one occasion, while in the middle of a fairly serious conversation with a business associate, a kid will blurt out "you have braces!". Now, I've found the best way to deal with this is to respond "Really? where did they come from?".
About a week ago I visited my previous place of employ, where one of the guys I used to work with asked (in a very serious tone) "what have you done to your teeth?".
I have to conclude that people who are shorter than myself are definitely more likely to notice/comment.

Not many people notice actually. And they don't really comment.

My husband was so impressed with my ortho work that he's now got them too! We look like a couple of teenagers. :D

On the positive side, a woman come up to me and cheered me on. She said she had her braces off a few months before and that I would be really happy in the end.

On the neg. side....my DD is being bullied in school. The latest taunt is that her Mommy has really ugly teeth (I have a big gap in front due to surgery).

The vast majority of people don't say anything. Of those who do, it's usually to say they had braces once, or they want to get braces, too. The one weird comment I got was from a coworker who said I look like a robot! (Believe me, this comment says more about him than about me!)

I'm in health care and at first no one said much. When I got headgear I got lots of sympathy both at work and at the gym. Some of my clients ask questions but that's about it. My partner, chef, also got braces, and got a lot of incredulous reaction from his co-workers who couldn't understand why someone would do that to himself willingly. But that's over too.

What people say or look at when I'm shopping or out and about is not my concern.

I teach high school. Not one student said anything about it. One the day of my first adjustment I asked a class to give me advice and what to expect. THey said no big deal, a little sore, take advil. It was absolutely no big deal. A few colleagues have asked about it or told me their own stories. Always supportive.

in Denmark it's rare to see an adult with braces. I guess that it's because orthodontic treatment is free for any child needing it (and wanting it) while in elementary school. So most adults will have any orthodontic issues sorted out.

In spite of being a rarity I haven't really received a lot of response. Most people incl. my co-workers haven't commented on it. A few friends were surprised that I decided to undergo treatment apparantly as I didn't need it in their opinion. The same friends never mentioned the braces when they saw me after being braced.

One co-worker who is kind of an idiot did say something like "it must have been a BIG decision for you" and looked at me as if somebody had died.
