DID YOU TEETH SPREAD?
I've been braced for a month and a half. I already started with a front gap that I hated and it's actually my reason for getting braces in the first place.
NOW, my gap is bigger and my teeth seem to be moving every which way but together. On my last visit, my ortho tells me that everything is fine. Why cant i accept that? And to make things worse, my slight overbite (he said I had) is even more of an overbite.
Do teeth really have to move in such crazy ways just to get into place? My face literally looks different with this doofy overbite. Arrgh! I feel so self conscious when I talk to people. I feel like my upper lip just juts out..
Somebody please share you crazy teeth movement story. Come on, help me sleep tonight, lol...

Umm...well, maybe this will make you feel a little better...
I also got braces to close the gap in my top two front teeth and to correct an overbite. my two front teeth have straightened out and moved together, so that gap is almost closed, but one of the teeth next to my front teeth has moved further away from my front teeth creating a rather large gap. This tooth has also moved down so that it is longer than its mate on the other side. It is really irritating, but I just keep telling myself that I'll have this braces on for approximately 7 more months and in that time the braces will have time to move everything so that my teeth look amazing.
Also, people on here have told me that things get worse before they get better.
I'm going to talk to my ortho about my one wonky tooth to see if they can reposition the bracket, or what their recommendation/advice is...I really just want the tooth to move back up because it is almost as long as my front teeth and it looks kind of odd and bothers me.
If your tooth movement is really concerning you, judt call your ortho and see what they say.

The arch wires moves your teeth not the bracket so I don't think repositioning is likely to make significant difference.
But to make you feel better SiennaMichele, I am going through something similar myself. I got my braces on March 26th and in this short time I have had some of my teeth do really well, some make no changes at all and my overbite has gotten much worse. I went for my first adjustment about two weeks ago and the ortho commented on it right away. She asked me if I had been playing with my teeth with my tongue and of course I had. She said yes she could tell because my teeth were moving out instead of in. Do you think you could be doing the same?
Anyway, I think Landela is absolutely correct in saying that teeth moving in wrong direction initially is a fairly common posting on the message board and there have been equally as many people who said that in the end, their teeth eventually went in the right direction and the results were great. Your ortho has a long term game plan and sometimes it's hard to see what the results are going to be because you're only looking at a very small portion of the plan.
Stay encouraged though. I know it's hard. I get a little freaky myself sometimes when I look at my pictures from week 1 to now but I have to just remember that I'm not the expert and so I have to rely on my ortho to do the best job she can.
Good luck!

yep,
a gap that i had between my front teeth got bigger and so did my overjet in the beginning. After the teeth were straight i got a powerchain to pull the teeth together. All the gaps disappeared. Later on I had my last molars attached to the braces and I had to get the thinnest wire. No powerchain at that time and all the gaps opened within couple of hours....
Now I have had powerchain all the time and i hope the gaps wont open again after braces are off.....

I've noticed some weird things happening to my teeth too. I thought I was prepared for these changes (I read lots of posts where people say it gets worse before it gets better) but I am realizing that I am not prepared at all. I can't stop looking at the mess...my overbite is way worse (by the way, I've been in braces for 7 weeks). A few weeks ago, my husband told me," I didn't realize how bad your overbite is...I don't remember it being THAT bad." And it never was that bad...I thought maybe now that I had braces it just stood out more. The other day I took a really good look and my overbite has really gotten worse. Also, I had gaps between my 3 front bottom teeth. the gaps have all been closed with the help of chains but these three teeth are really crooked and overlapping now!!! I can barely even floss them because it's so bad! I know it'll all get fixed but I am worried that the overlapping of those teeth is just going to extent my braces time. I still have another 3 weeks before my 2nd adjustment...hopefully those teeth won't get any worse. I think the chains are pulling my bottom teeth too close which caused them to overlap...oh and my bite on my left side is way bad..I can't even chew on that side anymore.
Whew...that felt good getting all that out...my husband is tired of hearing me complain about it so I've been keeping my frustration pent up inside of me!!

LOL, this sounds like my story....My daughter looked at me and told me that my upper front teeth appear "more pushed out" ....I noticed it, but when it was called to my attention, I became more self conscious.dugsmom wrote:I've noticed some weird things happening to my teeth too. I cannot wait for this willy nilly phase to be over with.
Funny I should get on and see this topic today.... I'm six months in, and up until now I haven't been the least bit self consious about the braces. Very recently, tho, I've noticed that my underbite looks even worse (the ortho told me it would happen) and the gaps are driving me nuts because some of them seem so big!! I had a bit of a pout about it this morning, because even tho I knew things would get worse before they got better, it's still a little bit of a shock to actually see it happening on my face!
Thanks for starting this thread, sienna, looks like a few of us needed to know were aren't the only one!!!!

Well I don't have an overbite, or a front gap, but I had some serious crowding. Anyway in the process my right side top now angles up so I have a gap on that side between my top and bottom teeth. I also now have a gap between my 2 front teeth due to a powerchain trying to pull up another tooth nect to it. All in all though I don't really care because I feel like it's all worth it to have non-crappy teeth. Maybe I'm just overly excited about these things lol..

The first thing my ortho told me was "Things will look worse before they get better" He told me he just wanted his patients to know that because many freak out. I did not have gaps but I got a pretty large gap in my front teeth after about 3months into treatment. I was not happy! But I repeated his comment over and over in my head lol. I thought I needed a power chain on top to close those gaps but they closed up soon after !
Several times my bite was terrible. Either I could not close my teeth or molars would sesame real bad....
This is your beginning of treatment. Those gaps will close ,trust me!

Spreading teeth....
I'm glad I saw your note. I came here to post a similar question. I got braced in April mainly because I had terribly jammed teeth, with an overbite and very crooked front tooth. I had 4 extractions...now I am starting to notice all sorts of terrible things including that my teeth haven't worn evenly (no surprise) and I am starting to have spaces! I thought I had something stuck in between my teeth but the "black" was empty space!
On the upside, flossing is simple, since I can feed it directly above the wire instead of having to thread it.
My ortho had mentioned I may need some cosmetic dentistry when we are done. But I wasn't even a candidate for THAT without the ortho...so I guess I'm stuck.
At age 51 I am starting to question the wisdom of my decision to go with braces. But on the other hand, NOT doing it to me would have been tantamount to admitting I was too damned old to bother and I really don't feel like I'm ready to kick the bucket just yet. So why not. I won't look 25 when I'm done, but that's ok. I'll just look pretty good for 53.

And thank you all for your encouragement. I have calmed down so much since starting this thread.
