comments on braces

#16 Post by blzrul »

I usually bring it up before others do, mostly because I either now lisp and need to repeat things occasionally, or because I demur when it comes time to eat certain things, because I can't.

One friend told me that with my braces and hairstyle I just needed to add glasses to look like Ugly Betty. Since I'm 51 and she's probablyl under 30, I took it as a compliment.

Someone told me his wife's story, but most people don't really have a reaction except "gee I never thought your teeth were particularly bad".

I get comments at work all the time about my braces nothing ever negative, most people tell me i look cute or look like a 12 year old :?: ( with a full goatee and a horrid 11pm shadow .. never mind the 5 o'clock shadow im lazy with shaving heh ) but most people are like WHEN DID YOU GET BRACES!?.. i mostly say a week ago and they look all stumpted, its pretty funny honestly, how little people can actually notice your teeth. When ALL you notice is that they're crooked...

That was me! It was the five-year-old that I take care of (I'm a nanny), he calls them "bracelets for your teeth" ;}

I was talking to a colleague last week and he suddenly stopped and said, "Oh, what's that on your teeth?"

Maybe not surprising - except that I've had the braces on since October last year - and he's only just noticed!!

Admittedly I don't work closely with him every day, but still... :)

Gotta add my two cents, for a good laugh...........

Since being braced last Decenber, both of my kids, Duncan(5), and MacKenzie(3) who both have the hereditary gap in the front and have went with me to the ortho, say they need them and want them. My ortho actually let them stand close and watch and looked in their mouths too!

It's so funny, MacKenzie, her fav color is pink, says she wants pink braces. It's so cute to hear her say it. And I will, for their sake, make sure we can afford braces for them as they will probably inherit my bad teeth and bite.

Also, my wife has decided to get braces now!!!!! She was amazed at how my mouth has changed, and the pain has subsided, and i'm so much happier. She gets her spacers next Tuesday and braces the following Tuesday. I'm so glad she is doing it.

Now we won't have to buy anymore matches for the fireplace, all we have to do is KISS!!! and point the sparks that directions..........Hehehehe.

The most annoying comments I got were from my family.

Dad: I don't know why you're wasting time and money on these braces. They make you look ugly and your overjet was fine to begin with. (If you were getting a haircut and I saw you in the middle of it, i'm sure i'd say it looks pretty bad too)

Cousins: When are you getting them off? Are they going to be done before you get married? You'll get them off for the wedding right? right? right? You can't have braces on for your wedding!
(it's my wedding and i'll have braces if I wanted to. Took them off anyway, but was annoyed as heck that they kept asking every time they saw me)

The most positive comments I got were that I've motivated them to get braces, invisalign, or at least a consultation.

I had the same experience.
Background: my teeth were really bad, two missing teeth in front with the gap spread out over several teeth, and all crooked.
Dad: If there is no pain, then why do it ? Just for beauty ? That is so superficial. Its so expensive.
Cousin: Your old, so whats the point of braces ?

My colleagues have not commented. A couple of my friends have commented on it, mostly because they were themselves into dental care.

So far, the responses have been pretty positive. Most of my coworkers are starting to notice after two weeks. Most think it's great. Including one who had braces on a few years ago. Some make comments like, "wasn't that expensive. I know your teeth are a bit messed up, but i didn't think they were that bad."

My students are ridiculously supportive. I was extremely self-conscious to go into school after getting braces. I love the age range of my students 11-15 (I have some pretty young, and pretty old middle schoolers), but they notice everything. Not good for a bad hair day. I was actually suprised how they reacted to my braces. They were thrilled...especially the ones getting ready to go to high school. I guess it made them feel better knowing that one of their teachers had gotten braces. They constantly ask how they feel, if i'm in pain, etc. It was so bad the first week, I had to be a bit abrupt and refuse to discuss my braces in the middle of class, so we could get work done. I also get tons of advice, usually reassuring me. They get even happier when they learn i have the same ortho as most of them.

Their one complaint, I do not have any colored rubberbands. The bottoms are the metal bracetless damons, which don't require rubberbands. The top are the clear ceramic damon's with clear bands. I didn't want to admit to them that I would have felt like a little kid getting colors on my braces.

Oh but picking out colors was so much fun, I actually miss this about braces, haha! Most people didn't notice anyway, and those that did thought it was cool I was having fun with it ;)

Hi
I haven't had a lot of comments at all. Most people seems to notice them and just not mention anything. Friends has commented it but always in a curious or friendly way. Some of them has been more direct than others and just said: You got braces????

The only one asking why was my mother who thought it wasen't anything wrong with my teeth. I believe all mothers are like that.
I have shown her before and after pics and now she's aware that the teeth wasen't that good before my brace journey :D

At my former workplace just a few people commented my braces. Now I work as a teatcher and have a lot of students with braces but it took quite a while before they mentioned or said anything about them. My coworkers hasen't said a thing. I never had any bad remarks at all about my braces.

One student did, as a joke, ask me if I didn't realize that an adult wih braces was very nerdy.

No deal getting braces as an adult. I would do it again if necessary.

I had one guy say "Nice braces". I replied that they had better be because they cost 4k. He winced and said that he needed them too.
Other than that, people just tell me that I look younger with them.

I was working in a factory around the same guys every day when I got mine. Every day people had to mention them, and I got a lot of "aren't you too old for braces?" Mostly in good humor though.

As a side note: I don't really think people go a long time without noticing your braces, but rather they don't want to bring it up if you don't. Some people might think it a rude topic, or none of their business, till they realize how open most people are about it.

I just started working in a grocery store and people have thought I was a good 5-8yrs younger than I actually am, hence thinking they could not buy cigs or booze at my register! I have had this happen a couple of times in the last week... it has been hilarious!!

Most of my coworkers were fine with it and poked fun here and there, but nothing serious. They wanted to "watch me eat broccoli" and stuff like that, but otherwise rather harmless at my day-job (not the grocery store).

Braces make me look like a teenager, even though I am 26. I just smile real big and keep on doing what I am doing. I still don't wear make-up or dress any differently than I did prior to braces. I just know I can be carded a little easier now that I look younger, but it is worth it!

I've only had 4 year old kids make any comment about my braces so far...both asked 'what are those things on your teeth for?'

My mother inlaw has asked the most questions about how braces work, etc.

My Father inlaw, when told of my treatment plan, asked the question 'but what if you don't like the end result?'

My answer to him was 'well it'll just be tough cookies won't it!'

Everyone has been supportive of me getting braces aside from my mum

LOL at the comment about Ugly Betty...I just got new glasses the other week and they are red! I can indeed do the Ugly Betty look now!
