I'm awful pain after ortho visit every 6 weeks. I've been taking 2 of Advil Liquid Gel (200mg) through out the day for first 1-2 days after adjustment. But I ran out so I decided to buy Tylenol Extra Strength (500mg) and it does not help with any tooth pain. So my boss gave me M357 (vicodin 500 mg) and I took half of it ontop of 500mg tylenol and I felt like drugged out dreamy and tired.. I think I o.d on these.
Does anybody get precription drug from Orthdontist?
What is safe to take and how far have you gone with pill to induce your pains??
For those painful days after an adjustment, I would take tylenol during the day and Vicodin before I went to bed at night. My orthodontist did not prescribe the Vicodin, my regular doctor did. The pain seemed to abate after about 10 or 11 months in braces, now I'm okay with just tylenol.
I've only really ever need prescription strength pain reliever when I had my wisdom teeth removed. For wire adjustments I usually use Aleve for the first 24 hours and then I get used to the extra pressure.

I don't have a prescription for anything, as my pain has now become fairly manageable after 7months of these things --- I use OTC.
-- 975 of coated aspirin is my fav, when I can't manage to eat bec I hurt too much, every 4hrs
-- 1000-1500mgs of extra strength un-coated aspirin when I really can't take it... however I only do this about 2 times every day or two, as it can really mess with the stomach
**Just be cautious when using aspirin, as it can impact blood pressure and can irritate your stomach. It can also make you bleed if you accidently nick yourself in the shower or have any other wound open at the time, which can become dangerous.
Advil and Tynellol don't do anything for me. Advil, taking 800mgs every 6hrs, just left me going to the bathroom a lot because it made me sick. Tynellol you can't take when you drink diet soda or it messes with the intestines too, which makes me dry heave uncontrollably.
I had a great deal of pain in the first several months of my treatment. It's gotten a LOT better, 8 months in, but I needed vicoprophen (5mg hydrocode, 200mg ibuprofen) plus 400mg of ibuprofen intermittently for those first few months.
First, Please be careful when mixing medications. Vicodin has hydrocodone and tylenol in it (the 500 indicates the amount of tylenol in mg, the hydrocodone was likely either 5 or 10 mg). Your intake of tylenol (aka acetaminophen, or paracetamol) should not EVER exceed 4000 milligrams in a 24 hour period. Taking more than 1000mg in one dose will not increase its pain relieving properties. It is highly toxic to the liver in doses higher than 4000mg/24 hours.
The standard dose of ibuprofen (aka Advil, or Motrin) for an adult is 600 to 800 mg every 6 to 8 hours, respectively. It is pretty effective for dental pain, in general, because it is an anti-inflammatory. You should take ibuprofen with food, though, because it can be very hard on the stomach. If you are taking it in the above doses for more than a week or so, you should contact your regular doctor to make sure it's ok for you to continue to take it. Ibuprofen is contraindicated in certain medical conditions. Please read the label.
Another thing you can do...
Rincinol is a liquid, topical pain reliever that you swish in your mouth and spit out. It tastes awful, but that one helps me when I am torn up.
If your pain still isn't relieved, you should call your orthodontist.
to relieve my pain after my adjustments i take 800ml of advil 1 hour prior to my apt. This seems to help relieve my pain after. Although i tend to not have a lot of energy for a few hours. for my first adjustment i just had to tkae the 800ml of advil and then it was fine, just some pressure pain afters. I didn't have to take anything the day after my apt and if i did i'd probably just try and take an advil.

I haven't needed pain meds often, but I usually find 400mg of ibuprofen (advil/motrin) 3 or 4 times a day does the trick. If it's really bad, I double up on ibuprofen and paracetamol (tylenol). After my last lot of mini implants were put in 6 weeks ago, I took 50mg of diclofenac (voltarol) left over from when I had a trapped nerve in my elbow, which completely removed the pain. It's an NSAID but about 6x stronger than ibuprofen. You have to eat with it though, otherwise it can upset your stomach.
Ive never taken anything stronger than paracetamol (tylenol) as i react badly to painkillers. And ive been fine-ish.
Even the day after my jaw op i couldnt have any strong painkillers so out came the paracetamol! Tho my surgeon did "risk" giving me codiene for a few days too.

I use the same Vicodin rx you do. If you view my posts, you'll see my first was me ranting about how my ortho wouldn't give me a prescription. Fortunately, my primary care physician was perfectly willing to. She said wasn't at all bothered giving it to me, because if I really wanted to abuse medication, I'd pick something a lot stronger than Vicodin.
God bless everyone that didn't have my experience, but my pain was absolutely agonizing. There was nothing over-the-counter that could touch it. Besides, I thought I read that muscle relaxants actually [inhibit] teeth movement??

Interesting how many people use ibuprofin. My ortho specifically told me not to take it. We had a previous conversation about it here: viewtopic.php?t=26105
