lol Image oral health military huh? thats too funny! my tongue ring dosent hit my teeth either... i was actually more concerned about my labret... i popped it in just to see and when i smiled it scraped the graft and it scared me!... so i think leaving it out is the best... the tongue ring dosent scare me as much but i wanna do whats best!

I'm actually a body piercer myself! and the way u pierce deff has an impact on the wear and tear on the teeth... what im gonna do it search for a type of jewlery that is made to be "teeth friendly" which i know exist somewhere cause this is a common concern for people who get oral piercings... but im so un decisive .. what can i say! im flawed lol but ill let u know if i find anything but as its stands i think im gonna remove them

Teflon (PTFE, polytetrafluoroethylene) - Teflon is an inert wear-resistant, slippery and flexible plastic, and has been used extensively as a component of permanent and temporary surgical implants.

Benefits of PTFE:

1) Can be Sterilized with Autoclave

2) Totally Flexible - It will bend with your body tissues unlike all metal Jewelry.

3) Hypo-allergenic - Being one of the least allergic materials, P.T.F.E. is used in the medical industry to make Heart Valves and other surgical implants. Should there be a problem of allergic reaction or rejection to conventional metal jewelry, it is likely that PTFE Body Jewelry is now a practical choice for that person under any circumstances.

4) Fully Adjustable- A razorblade is all that is needed to adjust the bar to the exact size of your piercing!

5) Self Threading - PTFE bars will fit all threaded accessories that you may already own! Simply screw-on your accessory (balls, spikes, etc...) on to a PTFE bar. It will create a thread on the bar and will hold strongly.

OR

NYLON POLYMIDE MONOFILAMENT - Monofilament is used in medical applications, in wig making and most commonly known, fishing line. Monofilament is a single strand (hence... mono) of nylon. There is nothing to fragment or splinter. The type of monofilament we use is called monofilament nylon polyamide. It is strong flexible and non-biodegradable (will not break down even with prolonged wear in the human body). This is the same material used in non-absorbable suture material. Monofilament nylon polymide is listed with the FDA as 'non-absorbable suture materials' under nylon - listing no - A 100568.

I decided to get my lip pierced about 7 months after I got my braces on and I've never had any problems with it. I didn't even have to take it out at adjustments and 5 years and one de-bracing later I am still happily pierced! I am due for braces again soon and am happy to keep my piercing in again this time.

I only had one incident which was kind of self inflicted - I used to hook the back of the bar (in front of the fishtail) over the archwire between my two front teeth and one day forgot to unhook it before I opened my mouth  I never did that again!
Second time in braces!

from a well inked and studded guy, there are so many places to pierce that do not cause dental damage...enjoy them and let the mouth do what it is supposed to do...EAT!

i decided to keep my tongue piercing in through the braces ordeal. i've had braces for however long the ticker says at bottom but no problems have occurred. i'd imagine a labret piercing, however, would be more uncomfortable.
my tongue ring sits rather nicely in my mouth, tho, touching the roof of my mouth and the very bottom of my mouth under my tongue [it's at a pretty good angle so it tends to lay "flat" and flush against the bottom of my tongue.

of course, i know it's not the best thing in the world for me [i do a lot worse to myself though... beer and taco bell, for example] but i haven't been motivated to remove it. after 10 years, you kinda get used to the thing :)

I have 3 lip piercings. 1 is labret the other 2 are just basically in the labret type area below my lips.. I posted another thread about getting braces in about a week..

I did have concerns about this issue, but after going over it.. I am keeping the piercings (have had them almost 6 years).. for mostly one or two reasons..

1. They don't touch my teeth or gums at all. I've never had any rubbing at all. The backs of the studs sit into a little groove "indentation" inside of my lip.. so they are virtually not there on the inside of my lip.

2. My dentist has never mentioned getting rid of them. I don't have bad teeth or gums (just sort of spacey and an impacted canine).. they said my lower gums are actually in better shape than my upper gums.. which is weird.. but hey.. it works.

So.. I vote.. if the piercings don't touch the teeth/gums/braces.. no reason to get rid of them! If they do.. obviously braces are a LOT more expensive than piercings.. so braces should win in the end.

I'm also partial to wanting to keep them "just because"... they do become part of you pretty much.. but to be logical.. it's better to keep things healthy than to be stubborn and waste your money.

I am soo glad mine don't touch my teeth or gums or I would be depressed having to get rid of them lol.. BUT.. I'm not out of the woods yet... until I get the braces next week. Then I can update on how the piercings work out. I'm thinking it should be okay since I have no issues currently. (Plus I never got into the bad habit of playing with them with my teeth and stuff.. whew!)

If your piercings haven't given you any problems and you don't have the risk of losing teeth due to the piercing rubbing on your gums then why get rid of them? It's not like everyone should get rid of their piercings. BUT if you have had gum surgery to correct any perio problems and it is in the area of your piercing backing, then maybe it is something to consider. Necra has had a gum graft and is in the general area of the piercing. Why risk the graft failing? I think it is just something important to think about, risk losing expensive gum graft to save a tooth or just take the darn thing out and maybe later have it repierced if it heals over. This is not a place where we are trying to convince everyone with oral piercings to take them out.

I just got my braces last week and so far I haven't been told by anyone (other than uninformed guessers on Yahoo Answers) that I need to take it out. I can see why a labret could be a problem but perhaps there is also an alternative solution. PTFE (Teflon) could be a viable option. My ortho and dentist both have never said anything. My barbell is at an angle and is not very close to the front of the tongue so it has never gotten in the way of any teeth or rubbed on them. I do eat many times a day but it really does not rub and I am able to (mostly) restrain myself from playing with it all the time.
