Jaw popping... after braces??

#1 Post by roxxie »

I've had braces for 10 months now. Before braces my jaw had never popped in my life. After about 4 months of braces it would pop occasionally; I know it's not supposed to and people get braces to FIX that! So I mentioned it to my ortho and he said to just not open my mouth too wide.

Well now, 10 months in, my jaw pops like crazy!! And all the time, even when just chewing normally! I'm going to mention it to him again at my next appt, in a week, but is this normal? Aren't braces supposed to fix problems, not create them?

Braces can actually CAUSE TMJ as well as treat it. They even warned me about this when I was at my intital consult, but my TMJ is so bad and is being caused by bite problems --- I said put the braces on and lets see what happens.

Talk with your ortho and see what your options are... which might involve working more with your bite or splinting later on down the line.

TMJ can be treated.

Thanks you guys...
I'm not too worried and I'm very confident in my ortho's abilities; he has treated no fewer than 5 other people I know and they have no problems at all. I will however make a serious point of it to him, and try not to get a brush-off answer.

I had this after my braces were removed. It didn't happen often, but when it did I noticed it. It eventually went away after a long time but I never had it before braces.
