Braced today

#1 Post by Yolanda »

Hi there,
I got my braces put on today both upper and lower in metal feels a bit strange dont really know where my lips are meant to sit.
I think i got a trainee doing mine because she didnt really know what she was doing and was asking alot of questions then when the orthodontist came in he showed her stuff aswell including some strange way of using the saliva sucker thing. Im all stoked up on Advil now and hopefully dont get too much pain.

Does anyones tounge get scratched up with the brackets around the molars its really sharp!

Hey Ema they gave me some wax, the only place i have put it is on the top molar bands both outside and inside its quite an annoying thing lol. Wax can be my new best friend.

When the girl got my brackets on and took the mouth retractor thing out of my mouth.. oh sheesh.. what a weird feeling that was.. My lips were stuck above and below my teeth because of the brackets and my lips were soo dry....I felt like I had bricks on my teeth..

Tomorrow will be a week since I got them.. I haven't needed wax thank goodness... I don't feel like dealing with that stuff.. but luckily they haven't torn up the inside of my mouth.. My teeth are just starting to feel better, but they are still sensitive. Still can't chew things very well without it feeling odd.

Good luck and hopefully yours don't hurt as much as mine did at first. I wanted to die.

It does take a little while for your lips to figure out where to go. I find I have a hard time keeping my mouth closed all the time now, as opposed to walking around with the ever attractive gaping-mouth look. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning I find my lips are stuck over my braces but other than that it will get easier really quickly. Eating will be tough but nearly 3 weeks in I'm finally beginning to feel normal in that arena too. Good luck!

Braced today too

#8 Post by wjbelle01 »

Hi everyone-

Today I got braces on. Clear uppers and metal lowers. I have a question that I am hoping someone can help me with.

I'm not able to close my jaw at all now since the braces have been put on. And as far as chewing my jaw is spaced so far apart now that I couldn't even chew if I wanted to. Is this normal?

Thanks,
Wjbelle01

Congrats on joining the club! Personally, I would rather have the tech ask questions than not say a word.... and in terms of the spit sucker, they can be held in a million different positions. They have even handed me the sucker once and told me to use it! I can't stand the smoke after they grind something or when I start drooooooling, yuck.

Use wax on the rough spots, just remember to try and not sleep with it so your mouth can learn to adjust. Just wear the wax during the day when you need it and use the Advil. It does get better!

If something still feels sharp after a few days, especially the back of the wire, go back in and have them clip it or sand it down. This is realitively normal to have done soon after getting them on. I think I had it done maybe 2x before my first adjustment. This doesn't happen as much now that my teeth aren't moving so drastically.
