Yay Karen... glad our comments helped and you're feeling better.

And, Bojo... your saying "idiots happens" is just the most precious! I'll be using that one all the time, it's too cute. Love your outlook by the way!

On a side note, you ask about referrals. Why are you located? Maybe an AW person can direct you to their ortho. I'd also ask my dentist for a referral. Two other options are to ask other adults, if you know any, about their ortho. Finally you can start calling. I would not go simply because someone is cheaper or their kid had a good experience. Adult needs are different than growing kids. You may have long term damage that the ortho must work around.

Finally I did have a few remarks. One from a ten something girl at church who had braces and now teases me that I have braces and she doesn't. I'm so hoping at 15 she has them again! Also at a camp out I heard a person say loudly to another, "I told you I wasn't the oldest person in the world with braces." She had just got hers and she was dealing with a few people questioning why she'd do it. I do believe that those type of comments are related to their educational level.

Enjoy this experience. Don't let others ruin it for you. This is something you're doing for yourself. Few times in life do we adults get to experience that.

Mike, I was really tickled by your comment! It's all about karma - what goes around comes around.

crystalct1 - I really like your perspective on this issue. You sound pretty confident in your decision. I think that is the best thing you can show in response to thoughtless comments.

I've been lucky and haven't run into any thoughtless people. I did have one guy tell me I looked like a robot, but you'd have to know the guy. Even though that sounds really bad, I know this guy well enough to know he didn't mean to be hurtful.

When I let my boss know (a month in advance) that I would be about an hour late on the day I was to get my braces.. he replied with: "Why did you wait this late in life to get them?" I'm 21... that's not old.. and my parents couldn't afford them when I was younger. One of his sons has braces.. I should have asked him why he made him get them so early in life.. lol

Mostly people have been positive a couple of friends have even got braces since. Generally I agree negative one liners are probably not a good idea, but I couldn't resist this one!

A work colleague asked me if lots of people thought I was mad, to get braces, to which I replied "no, not generally, only older people have been negative, younger people think it's a great idea!"

She's a bit of a negative person, so all at work paid for it for the rest of the day she was in a fowl mood, but then it doesn't take much! I have to say though it's true, younger people 20's or less don't bat an eye lid, older people although usually nice about it do seem a little more surprised.

I have to say though within a week of getting braces, the whole thing dies down a bit and people forget about it, and life goes on.

Why if given that situation would I not be able to respond so cleverly? I'm sure I would have thought of it five minutes too late. Guess that means I'm old. What a second, I don't think adult braces are a negative thing. Maybe I still have a bit of youth left (said he in the brightly colored shirt getting ready to drop the top on his convertible).

I got lots of comments in the beginning asking why I got braces because my "teeth were already straight". I told them it wasn't for cosmetic reasons, rather medical. "Braces for 1.5yrs sure beats taking migraine meds everyday for the rest of my life!"

I get comments at work when people come through my line at the grocery store (I work part-time as a cashier) --- I get "carded" by the customers... they don't think I'm old enough to sell them cigs, so they ask if they need to go through another line and say it rather rudely. I would like to respond by saying "you are 8yrs too late for that!"... but I have to keep my mouth shut!

Humm... if I was you I would be really tempted to point out offers on cosmetic products that might be relevant (whitening tooth paste, anti-aging cream etc)... but that's naughty!

You must have great skin if they think you are young enough to ask for id.

Mike I'm sure the sports car and the braces take years off you!
