Still a bit confused

#1 Post by Rachel B »

So,
Today I phoned around some other places to ask about other options (at my orthodontist consultation they told me they don't do ceramics).
I have met dead ends everywhere. All the orthodontists I have phoned have said they don't do ceramic and all the dentists I have spoken to say they would refer me to the original orthodontist I went to anyway.
I'm kind of accepting that I am going to have to have metal braces but I'm scared. Am I going to be ugly for a year and a half or is it not that bad? And am I going to be in loads of pain?
:(

That's strange. My orthodontist won't put them on the bottom, but i thought most offered the ceramics for the uppers. Try contacting one of the manufacturers and see if they can steer you to an ortho near you who uses them. As for pain, I haven't been in much and I've had mine on for about 9 months.

I am in the South west of the UK so that might effect the availability of treatments.

Metal really isn't that bad. If I had to do it over, I'd go with ceramics on top, but be honest, you wont be able to hide your braces from everyone anyhow.

Hi, phoning a manufacturer might really help if you can locate one. I had ceramics only and I am so glad I made the choice. Plus I never had any problems with brackets falling off or anything like that for the almost-two years I had them (I got debanded today :) )

You cannot hide braces forever but the ceramics really make it less obvious, esp. when you may have special events to attend and photos to take etc. Early on, in my braces, people couldn't even tell I had braces and a few who noticed thought it was merely a retainer I was wearing.
Upper and lower bonded retainers; Upper Hawley for night time

DEBANDED ON FRIDAY 15TH AUGUST 2008 - FINALLY!!!

Braced on 13 September 2006 - Ceramic upper and lower brackets - Estimated time was 12 Months

Another note.....even if the orthodontist does offer ceramics, not everyone is a candidate. It all depends on your treatment. I was not a good candidate for ceramics so I had metal. I probably noticed them way more than anyone else did.

Thanks for all your responses and sorry if I offended anyone by asking if I'll look ugly. I was just venting my own worries about how I'll look!
