Do braces cause bone loss?

#1 Post by Her »

With this whole talk of extractions, Ive been reading some other things about how braces, especially in adults, can cause bone loss? Is that true? Anyone ever hear of that happening. Some people on a different forum also suggested that perhaps its also from the retainer constantly resting on the teeth, weaking enamel?

I know sometimes I ask ridiculous questions but its not easy being crazy, believe me. These concerns are perfectly valid in my brain.

use the search function. This topic has been done over and over.

As for the retainer wearing away enamel. Not happening!!

When you put pressure on teeth and bones, it definitely causes bone loss. The bone also reforms. You can ask an orthodontist about this. Also, when your teeth are brought back, it's obvious that the bone is in a different place. For that to happen, a certain amount of loss occurs.
