Is it common to see lots of tooth movement at first?

#1 Post by naturegirl »

I've now had my braces for 3 weeks and 1 day and I've notice big changes already. There are spaces of (1 mm or a little more) where I didn't use to have spaces and my top two front teeth appear straighter than pre-braces.

I'm just wondering such changes at 3 weeks would be considered average tooth movement speed or a little on the fast side? (It's probably wishful thinking to think that my teeth are moving faster than normal, but it's still fun to think they are!!!)

I can't seem to take a non-blurry picture of my teeth. Does anyone have any suggestions for tooth picture taking? I'd like to post a pre-braces and current braces closeup pic so people can see what I'm trying to describe.

Depending on your starting conditions, I think it is definitely possible to see some tooth movement so soon. I noticed stuff happening within a few weeks of getting braced too...your teeth pretty much don't have a choice but to move with all that pressure! Take it as a good sign :D

Unfortunately there will probably be times during your treatment that you feel there is little to no progress, or at least not noticable to you, so it's good for your sanity that you're seeing movement now!

I've only been braced on the top arch for 6 days, and i see(and feel) noticable movement in my front 8 teeth. My ortho actualy said "these are going to get moving fast. If you see movement within the first week, you are not imagining things".
I though it was BS at the time, but glad it wasn't.

There were tons of movement during my first 2 months. I am at month 6 and haven't seen much movement in the last 2.
I guess its normal to see a lot of movement during the first few weeks till things get a bit more settled.

I think its more noticeable at the beginning because the bite and teeth have to move because of the new forces being applied. Whereas towards the end of treatment roots are being worked on more so. I know that for me I noticed significant changes the first month and a half then after that I didn't notice much at all. Just some bite changes, clicking teeth, and my central incisors are virtually touching now (yay 1 gap closed 6 more to go). And the usual touch and go of discomfort. None of my wires poking me severely either so I havee not had major movement since my last adjustment in Sept. I can't give any advice on picture taking bc I'm still trying to master it myself.

Hey Naturegirl. Hope you are good!

I was the same when I had braces, I saw a huge movement in my bottom teeth and a few in my top teeth within the first month of me getting braces, and I remember thinking to myself about why on earth would it take 18 months! But then I realised that the bite is probably why braces take so long, as it restructures your jaw.. But from what I have heard, and seen, Alignment improvements are usually seen quite quickly.

How are you finding having braces anyhow? Is everything going ok?

Use the "macro" function on your camera. It is for taking close up shots ;)

Does the "macro" function go by any other names? ...Because I don't think I have that on my camera. This is the best current picture that I could take.

...and just for comparison, here is a "pre-braces picture that they took at my initial consultation. Look at how much my upper right central and lateral incisors moved!! Where they used to touch, there is now a 1mm space. (It's at least a 1 mm, anyways..)

Look for a button with a tulip-like flower on it. If you don't have a button physically on the camera, look for it in the on-screen menu options.

That's practically normal, that's how common it is. I saw movement in my upper laterals within days. The other teeth took a while to get going, like a month/6 weeks. You should see them now. I keep intentding to post progress pics but i never get around to it. :|
