splint therapy
Hello just had a new consult ortho wants me to do splint therapy for tmj to se if that will relieve my tmj.I am wondering if any one else has had this and how well did it work for you Thanks trw20
I did wear a splint for a little bit more than two years before getting braces.
At the beginning I wore it all day round -let's say most of the time- for like three months, and then moved only to night wear plus while driving or working on my computer (often, most of the day).
The splint really helped my TMJ, and the symptoms went away. Once that happened, the doctor advised me to get my bite sorted out, since my TMJ problems were mostly due to a crossbite but he insisted that the before anything could be done on that front I should wear the splint until my TMD became 'asymptomatic'. Only then braces were recommended.
Hope this is helpful
Oh, yes, and the splint is kind of annoying especially if you have to wear it full time, since it does affect your speech -a lot the first few days, a little bit afterwards- but then, wearing it at night and when you're at home is not a problem, I even ended up with some splint-dependency: I couldn't sleep without it, and often missed it since it really relaxed my jaw joints...
