Can stress in the jaw muscle cause lumps under the skin?

#1 Post by Elspeth »

Hello,

I've had my braces on for about four days now. Everything has been hurting a bit, but in particular the right side of my jaw is very sore. Yesterday I was poking about under and around my chin/jaw feeling where it hurts, and I noticed a little fleshy lump along my jawline.

Its not a pimple; it feels more like... well, a fleshy thing under the skin, that when I put pressure on it it kind of squishes about. Its on the side of my jaw thats been hurting/that I tend to grind and click. You can't see it but with a light brushing of the fingers you can feel the bump of it.

It definately wasn't there before I got my braces, as I tend to massage my jaw a lot and never noticed it before.

Should I be worried? Should I call my ortho? Could it be like, a swollen jaw muscle or something or not related at all?

I would research it a bit and then call your ortho or doctor to have it checked out. I have jaw issues as well and I have never had a lump of some sort appear out of nowhere. I'm hoping the best for you whatever it is. Don't stress too much about it dear!

I remember a girl when I was in high school that had her wisdom teeth removed and ended up with a large lump on her jawline for a few weeks. I never asked her about it but I thought it was pertinent to add considering it was directly involved with her teeth.

This sounds like an enlarged lymph node, possibly. Slightly tender to the touch? If that's what it is, it should go away in a few days, but don't touch it too much or massage it. I usually get them when I have an oral sore, or if I am getting sick, or my immune system is down. I hope you feel better soon....

I agree with Sak. I think it will probably go away when you adjust to the braces. You really should contact your dentist anyway.
