The day finally came and I got the whole contraption in. So far it's not THAT bad. It's only been an hour however.

Mainly the sliding noise of the bars going back and forth is bothering me. It also seems like I'm bitting on of the bars but my ortho tells me this is not the case. I'll have to get used to cleaning a whole new way also.

Still...maybe I shouldn't but I feel encouraged. I do this if this is as bad as it gets.

Congratulations!

Don't worry if your Herbst makes a little noise, mine did and no one else ever seemed to notice.

Cleaning is REALLY hard with the Herbst especially on the bottom front teeth. Flossing was pretty much impossible for me, and I ended up with a lot of tartar build-up. I strongly suggest investing in some of that expensive threader floss with the stiff end, even though it's expensive. Also, the appliance traps food at the back of your mouth, so have a dental pick or something like that handy. I think Lynn (the site admin) sells dental picks on her DentaKit.com website.

And remember, don't open your mouth too wide, or the Herbst will get stuck or come apart!

Good luck, and let me know how things go!

Thanks Sallymonster. (love the screen name btw)

I wish I had be around when you were going through this so that I could have offered some commiseration.

I have to admit that I'm repressing the urge to open my mouth to see if I could make it get stuck. Does that sound crazy? I find myself curious about what it would be like.

Did it hurt when you got the appliance taken out? It hasn't even been a week and I'm already thinking about such things.
