retainers broke

#1 Post by nwmedia2009 »

Hi, I got my braces off in november and in January my clear invisilign type retainers broke. I was afraid of paying for a retainer because if they broke i had to replace them. So I havnt worn them since and my gap opened up but my teeth are still straight. What treatments can be done to have my gap closed other than braces again.

I would go and pay for the replacement retainers if it were me... You may find that wearing them again full time for a while they will bring the teeth back into the correct position again so long as they've not gone too far out of alignment. Your ortho should be able to make them up from the impressions he made for your original retainer. I've been told that a replacement retainer will cost approx £55 here in the uk - I'd find rather the cash for that than being braced again.

If that doesn't work, I don't think you'd have much option other than braces again. I'm not a pro though so could be wrong. If you only had braces off in Nov, I'm guessing you are still seeing your ortho for follow-up appointments so why not give him a call and schedule an appointment so as he can clarify your options.

I would have the orthodontist make you another retainer. It will probably be cheaper than having to go through another type of treatment.
Most days I forget I even have braces.

If you have a Hawley retainer made instead (the type with the wire) it would probably be able to close your gap. Hawley retainers tend to also be more durable than the clear Essix type.
I'm the owner/admin of this site. Had ceramic uppers, metal lowers ~3 years in my early 40's. Now in Hawley retainers at night!
