Gum sensitivity - post braces

#1 Post by kirjax »

Okay the gum inbetween the molar of wear the band was taking off is still really sensitive (esp, on the left side) when I eat harder foods and majorly when I floss. Will this go away? It seems to get worse or I would have brought it up to the hygentist a few weeks ago (who said everything looked great)! Could it be that my gum was used to havin something there semi blocking it for 2 years from food and now it's exposed and just has to take time to toughen up again?

I mean once I eat something that irritates it there is nothing I can do until the inflammation dies down. And it's mostly just on that one side which is weird. Did anyone else experiece gum sensitivity after braces were removed.

Hmm not sure kirjax. I still have some gum sensitivity after debanding (same time as you) and I too was going to have it checked out at my next appointment, which is 6 April. I don't have much pain/discomfort now, although there was some for about 10 days, but there is a small lump at my gums between my molars and premolars on one side that looks not totally cool.

Anyway I'll report back after my next appointment. :)

The gum sensitivity that I'm experiencing is quite normal my ortho said and he instructed me to use listerine 4-5x a day to help toughen up the tissue as well as to scrub in between the molars even through the pain. He said basically it's like having bruised gums and they just need some tough scrubbing to get used to the fact that I now have a space for food to get caught up in which is basically irritating my gums.

So if any of you experience post brace gum irritation it's quite normal.

Thanks for the info.

Mine has all sorted itself out now - I've been doing salt water rinses which I think has had the same effect as you were talking about.

I would do salt water rinses but I seriously gag lol. I don't like them at all!!!

He said that lessoning my time in the retainers will help to so that's why he reduced my 24 hour sentence to 16 hours which rocks!
