Went to the dentist today and I can actually see a difference after 4 weeks. I thought I couldn't, but when I compare the mould of my old teeth to how my teeth are now, there really is an obvious change. He thinks another 4 to 6 weeks oughta do it....so I'm thrilled. I suppose I wasn't a really dreadful case but I did have obvious overlapping and tooth rotation so the progress made is great.
Lucky Lou...I never had the arch expander (sounds awful!). The inman isn't so bad. I seem to be the only person using wax with the inman, but that really does make it so much easier to speak to people. I have a lot of telephone dealings in my job and I can speak on the phone. Obviously my speech isn't perfect but definitely understandable so definitely think about getting some. I wear mine about 23 hours a day because I can wear it at work and out in the pub etc.
I will see if I can get some photos up.

Just an update for anyone interested - I've had the Inman on for just over 10 weeks now, and the dentist called a halt to the key-turns on the expander part of it after about 6 weeks. I went for a routine check-up earlier this week and the dentist seemed to think I was pretty much finished treatment, but I wanted my front two teeth in just a bit more. So he fitted two composite 'fillings' to my front teeth to give the Inman something extra to push against and keep it in place.

The pain! Serious aching caused by these tiny clear bumps on my teeth. What's worse is the surprising sensitivity they've caused. I popped open a can of 7up shortly after leaving the surgery on the day of my check-up, took an unsuspecting glug and... I think my squeals were heard in Greenland. Shooting pain right up through my nose into my head. Awful. The sensitivity's still there today. Anyone know what's causing this? Are the composite fillings given some strange dose of UV light or something? I know that the nurse used some weird looking pen device to seal them, I think.

Anyway, apparently movement can come very quickly at this stage so I'm back for another check-up next week. Can't wait to get these damn bumps off. With any luck I'll be done with Inman shortly. I'll post some pics soon for comparison.

Hope everyone else's treatment is proceeding well!

P.S. I've lost about a stone since I started with Inman. It doesn't half curtail your snacking!

There seems to be a cluster of us Scots here all getting treated at Craigentinny ;) I'm glad to hear that all is going well for you while I'm still waiting on my first appointment which is next week! On the one hand I can't wait to get the process started, but also filled with dread... will it be embarassing... will it be sore...
I will get the Inman fitted (provided all going well next week! Fingers crossed!!) at the end of May. The timing works out perfectly cause I will have a two week holiday straight afterwards. Hopefully enough time to built up confidence to wear it to work and practise my speech by the sounds of it ;)

Is everybody else wearing the thing to work and how are you getting on?? Still really really concerned, insecure person that I am, about the reaction of other people. I work in a huge office and my work is about getting teams to work together, so constantly in meetings, on the phone and generally chatting! I tell myself not to be such a wuss but ... you know??!!

Finally sifted out some pics for the curious (wish others would post some more, too!) and sorry about the quality and angles, it's tough to get a good match. The first set is from before starting with Inman, the second is 9 weeks into treatment. Not sure if it's a noticeable difference, feels like there's a long way to go yet! Hope this works...

Just struck me... looks like Inman has at least stopped me from my old habit of chewing my lips to pieces!

hi there !! .... well after i got the impressions taken i had to wait 3 weeks for the aligner to be made .. not sure how long it was for the others .. maybe they will come back on and say ..

personally i dont really mind how it looks when it is in ... .it is clear and although it is noticed i dont feel it looks as bad as a mouthful of metal braces ....its only the speech for me ... 2 1/2 weeks in i still would not wear it outside the house. i also work in a very large office. Even if i wasnt telephone based i still wouldnt wear it to work (LOL!!!) as i feel it gets frustrating for me not being able to speak properly !!!!

you seem to be feeling exactly how i was feeling but once you have got it all you will think about is the finished result .... 12 or so weeks ?? not long .. cant be that bad eh ???!!!!!!!!!!!xxx

Hi all, I'm now nearly two weeks into my IA and I can honestly say I'm astonished at the results already, I had a humungus gap between my front teeth and they protruded out the way as well which pushed my top lip out. Now the gap has almost closed and I can certainly feel my lip has gone back. As for wearing the IA, I wear mine outside with no problems although have to get whoever I'm with to ask for things, etc. when I'm in a shop - but it doesn't bother me at all and I was VERY insecure about my teeth before (hence the reason for getting the IA in the first place), I would shy away from nights out/meeting up with friends - that's how bad it was, so now I proudly tell people "yes I have got a brace but its only for 3 or 4 months" and that seems to shut them up!!!! Honestly please don't be embarassed about wearing it, its there for a reason and we have all paid good money to improve our looks.

It was sore for the first few days as others will know from my previous posts but now, I can honestly say it doesn't hurt at all and as the teeth move it doesn't feel as bulky in your mouth either. I only take mine out to eat and drink tea so am quite lucky that way, I had to take my son to the doctors and was proud of myself that I kept it in, apologised for my talking and off I went !!!

Good luck with your IA - I know I'd rather be like this for 3 months than 2 -3 years with a fixed brace - let us know how you get on :D x

Expander

#280 Post by luckylou »

Hi guys

I wondered what your thoughts were on the expander brace? I have this in alone, for the next ten weeks apparently, then move onto the Inman aligner for eight or so weeks. It is really bulky in the palate area and sits right behind my front teeth. Speech is pretty bad. Has anyone had this also, and is the IA much better for speech after the expander? Cheers.

Thanks jodiejo and sandiepandie for your encouraging words, much appreciated. I know I have to stand above what other people think, and it's only for a short period of my life... and have all these years to look forward to when I will congratulate myself for enduring the few weeks of discomfort!!

Also it is so great to see pictures - isobelleo thanks so much and you can definitely see a big improvement already! It is so nice to see proof of that the IA works.. I will definitely try to post pictures when I get started with the process.

My dentist said my case should be straightforward, but there is a fair amount of filing involved. Fortunately my teeth are quite big and I have a wide smile :D I am quite self conscious about the way I smile, basically I perfected a way of smiling where you can only see a minimum of teeth (if that makes sense). Over the years it has gotten to a stage that I feel my teeth restrict me - anything which i feel could draw attention to them I will avoid. So it is quite a big deal for me to get this done..

Look forward to hearing updates from everyone & will be back to check frequently !

hi lucky lou .. well i didnt have to have the expander brace but i think it is mentioned on this forum somewhere !!! ... the IA is quite bulky right behind the front teeth as well but not sure how it compares .... there is just a thinish metal bar in the palate area which i seem to rub my tongue against a lot which means i now have a constant mark on my tongue !!! ... i must try to stop doing this !!! LOL !!!

Inman - wearing in public

#284 Post by nicesmile77 »

Hi all. I have had the inman now for 6 weeks and there is a definite change in my teeth. I had overlapping of my front teeth (almost finished) and tooth rotation (a little bit to go yet). I have spoken on this forum before about wax that I use to sort of plug the hole to form a palate and I swear it works wonders, there is only a slight hiss and lisp. I talk on the phone no problem, although for complicated phonecalls I do remove it. By not wearing it at work, you are cutting out 6 hours that you could be wearing it which will significantly increase your treatment time.
My dentist said that I should be finished in a month (10 weeks treatment in total) and I think that is because I am wearing it 22+ hours a day.
To hell with everyone else I say!! I did get a bit of slagging at work about it but you just rise above it and think of the lovely pearlies you'll have!!
I don't have really good before photos, so for those who are wondering what it looks like, I will post a photo shortly of what it looks when you are wearing it
