Braces and Glasses

Braces and Glasses
It sounds like every teenager's worst nightmare - braces and glasses at the same time. I got my eyes tested this afternoon, and while I was trying on new pairs of glasses, I started wondering how it'll look in a few months when I finally get braces.
So what kind of look should a specky brace-face go for? Do you try to go stealth with tooth-coloured brackets and rimless glasses? Or geek chic with dayglo elastics and chunky plastic frames?
I've decided what I want to do, but it would be interesting to hear other people's thoughts.

I started to have bad vision when I was 12 and I have pretty much always worn contacts but I have a pair of glasses as a backup just in case... I have plastic frames and I think they look better with braces because metal frames with metal braces is a lot of metal goin on, haha. I actually have ceramic self ligating so its not all metal but the wire is metal and the doors on the brackets are also.

I have black square metal frames with lime green flowers on the arms, I had plastic frames before but they broke and I was sad I wear contacts socially, but to work I wear my glasses usually, and yesterday one of my coworkers came in and said to me "Did you JUST get braces??".
So my bold, cute glasses draw the attention away from my braces!

I'm glad you posted this. I have an appt with the optomotrist in a couple days. Right now, I wear glasses to drive at night and to read. Haven't worn them since I've been braced. I need to get new glasses as I'm sure my prescription has changed, so this will help me get some ideas. My current glasses are wire rimmed, so- I'm thinking a change of style is in order so I don't have too much metal going on! Thanks for the tips, I would have never thought about all the wire on my face. I'm not very fashion savy and need all the help I can get!
I was planning to get some nice, colourful plastic frames for that exact reason - and I really like the way they look *without* braces anyway - since not many adults in my area get orthodontic treatment, so bold glasses might encourage people to look me in the eye when they talk to me. The type of orthodontic treatment I'm getting means that it'll actually look worse for a long time, so I'm plotting to do some noticeable things with other aspects of my appearance to draw attention away from my mouth and give me something I can feel good about.switchblades wrote:I have black square metal frames with lime green flowers on the arms, I had plastic frames before but they broke and I was sad I wear contacts socially, but to work I wear my glasses usually, and yesterday one of my coworkers came in and said to me "Did you JUST get braces??".

Wow, weird. I was just thinking about posting something about wearing both braces and glasses this morning, then I logged on and here this is!
I normally wear contacts but a few weeks ago I accidentally hit myself in the eye with the corner of an envelope and scratched my eyeball quite badly. So for the next couple of months I'm not allowed my contacts.
I like geeky glasses. Mine have chunky green plastic frames. But I don't normally wear them at work or out socialising so I have been feeling a bit self-conscious now I am wearing them all the time.
After reading what everyone else has had to say though I'm gonna embrace geek chic and hold my head high on Monday!

That's funny. I was thinking the same thing. Well, I've been wearing glasses since I was 16. I'm blind. =] I knew I was going to be getting braces in May, so in December I got fitted for contacts. I have this huge fear I'll look just like Ugly Betty. HOWEVER... although people say I look great with my contacts in... I personally prefer myself with glasses. I have two kinds of glasses.. I have the edgy plastic frames, and then i have these bronze metal frames. I don't have my braces yet (MAY 18 =]), but it'll be nice to know I have option between glasses, and contacts.
It's how you rock your style. As long as you rock it with confidence, everyone will love it. =]

I have rimless glasses (had them before I got braces) and clear upper brackets so I have the minimalist look going on right now. It's a fine look, but I'm board with it, and I need new glasses so am going to go for something totally different and bold. But I've had braces for a year and a half, and at this point, they are no big deal to me at all--hence my confidence going bold with glasses.
I had an adjustment on the day I had my last eye appointment a couple of months ago, and I picked out cobalt blue half rimed glasses and had my ortho put on pretty much the same color ligs....My husband makes fun of me all the time of being the geek in the house....braces and glasses....oh yeah, i have a mouth full of metal brackets!

I have braces and glasses; never thought about how they match each other. Not important really. I'm a geek, now even geekier now with braces .

I have had glasses since I was 7 and this is my second time in braces! I wear contacts on the weekend but I wear my glasses at work during the week. They are square with really chunky white arms and they are awesome! I mostly forget that I have braces so wearing both doesn't bother me. However, when I am suffering from PMT I can manage to convince myself that I look stupid and hideous...but that passes pretty quick
