Moderate overbite? Did I really need teeth removed?

#1 Post by khrystal1968 »

Looking over my records and stuff it states I had a moderate overbite and crowding. Ortho had 3 first premolars extracted. For some reason I am still in doubt and wonder if my treatment could have been carried out a different way. My face is going to look all pushed in now. During the first 9 months of treatment my teeth were turning out ok, the only thing was that my bottom teeth flared out a bit. In the record it also states that my upper jaw was of normal size and my lower was smaller. Can extracting teeth in a normal sized upper jaw do any harm? Just wondering. Second opinion Tuesday.

I'm scheduled on 9/22 to have 4 1st molars removed. I have no advice but am interested to see what others have to say about this.

I have a fairly severe overbite and overjet, with a normal sized upper jaw and small lower jaw. No extractions, but BSSO surgery to move the jaw forward. both ortho and os stated my bite could not be corrected with ortho alone, both recommended BSSO. Ortho said maybe extractions on the bottom if once the were aligned there was still some crowding, but there seems to be ample room.

Just an FYI, hope it works out for you!!

I had a pretty bad overbite, and my teeth were flared. When I first got my braces on the Ortho mentioned extractions.

I told him that I would prefer them not come out and he told me he would try and fix them without extrations. I give the man credit, he really did try for 10 months to fix my problems without extracting the teeth.

Then he talked to me and after seeing befores and afters, I understand exactly why they needed to be removed. For the first time in my life, I finally have a chin! My gaps are almost closed now and I have to say that I don't regret my decision.

I just wanted to let you know that extractions CAN work.

I think there is a distinction between overbite and overjet. I have a moderate overbite but severe overjet. I don't know what that means but I can't wait for my mouth to be pushed in more because I can't close my mouth all the way and if i do I look like i'm pouting! :<
