swollen cheeks, feeling ill

#1 Post by hello »

Hello! I got braces 2 days ago and yesterday i broke a bracket while eating chocolate. An hour or so after that i started to feel ill. I thought it was because i hadn't eaten enough, so i ate but it didn't go away. Today i noticed my upper lip and cheeks look swollen and i still feel ill. Can the swelling be due to sores caused by the braces? What should i do? Can't get in touch with my ortho until monday.

You may have an allergy to latex or nickle. Call your orthodontist right away to discuss this! Do not wait until Monday. Get in touch with him TODAY. If you can't get ahold of him, call your regular dentist.

out of the 2 allergies suggested. I would guess latex. NIckel allergies are very rare and there isnt much free nickel in arcwires, etc. I have treated countless pts who have nickel allergies without any cange in archwires, etc. I am not saying it is an allergy but if it is latex would be my guess.

I would call the doc if you are concerned. Isnt there an emergency number? or at least an answering machine?

There's no emergency number. However i've found her cell phone #. But i feel like it's not appropriate to call, especially since it's saturday night where i live. I don't feel terribly ill either.

Is it possible that waiting until monday will harm me in any other way than me feeling a bit ill until something is done?

If you begin feeling even more ill, then you should see a dental or medical professional.

Some people think that allergies just cause inconvenient hives, etc. But the truth is, allergies can change and get worse at any time for no known reason. They can lead to anaphylaxis which can cause death in extreme cases.

If your symptoms get worse, especially if you feel like your throat is swelling up and you can't breath, get yourself to a doctor or hospital.

Saturday night or not....I would call the ortho and describe the symptoms. Better safe than sorry.

It sound serious! I would call the doctor right away! If you wait you might end up in the ER.
