Shaky molar that is banded

#1 Post by rhxy »

I just got braces last Saturday (three days ago). As I suffer from bruxism, my left upper first molar had been feeling a little bit shaky before the braces. It was not shaky to the point of moving when I tried wiggling it in the past. As it felt insignificant, I did not highlight this to my orthodontist.

After it got banded, I feel that it's gotten looser and I'm rather scared to bite down on it because it feels more shaky. When I look in the mirror and bite down, it looks like it's shaking a little bit. I'm not sure if it's because:

1) the teeth are supposed to be moving already so it's normal?
2) of the pressure exerted on the tooth as it's now an anchor point? The upper right 1st molar is not as shaky though. However, I can't bite properly using the right side because of my crossbite and the brackets.

My next appointment is 8 weeks away and I'm feeling a bit worried that the tooth may fall out if I accidentally bite down hard or something. I can't bring forward the appointment so what I can do is only to wait. I have been eating porridge/cereal/soup. Nothing solid so far.

I was trying to think positively; that if the tooth was strong enough to withstand the placing of the separators (that was a horrid experience) and also the fitting of bands (taking out and placing them in again), it should be fine?

I'm quite worried about the tooth and when I can finally start eating normal food. The way things are.. it doesn't seem quite possible. :(

Have you had such an experience? Also, if there was something wrong with that tooth, would it have shown up on the x-rays? My orthodontist is aware of my grinding problem.

Grinding issues aside, it's normal for teeth to become slightly loose when moving with braces. For me, it typically happens to a few teeth right after an adjustment and lasts for a few days to maybe a week. If I push on the tooth with my tongue or bite down, I feel it moving a tiny bit.

Thanks! It's the 10th day now and it's still somewhat shaky. Oh well, I hope it gets better. :)
