Welcome aboard! Get ready for what could be the best experience, the worst experience, or the biggest love/hate soap opera of your life...I'm sure you will love it...there will inevitably be times where you want to take a tool and pluck your braces out, but then you hear the compliments and see the transformations, and you can feel how differently your smile and bite feel. Then you'll know it's all worth it in the end. Good luck in your treatment!
Braced (upper and lower): 10/29/08
Debraced: 3/17/10
Now sportin' a permanent bottom retainer
Alternate clear retainers every 12 hours

Congratulations in making one of the best decisions, for yourself, in your life!

I am 47 yrs. old and my only regret is that I didn't decide to do this sooner! I had clear ceramics put on my top teeth and metal on the bottom in July 2008. No regrets about this decision! As a middle-aged adult, I like the clear on the top and I have never had a bracket come off. If you're interested, the fee I paid is $4,650 and it includes all treatment (I go every 4 weeks) and my retainer. I will be in braces approx. 24 months.

My main problems are a cross bite, significant crowding on my bottom front teeth, and a turned top tooth. I am amazed at the progress! My teeth are very straight now, but my ortho is working on improving the crossbite.

You will probably see much progress in the early months and then it seems like there are months when the progress is slower. I highly recommend that you take photos (spams work great!) throughout your treatment. You can really see the improvements, even when you think things are going at a slower pace.

Good luck! This website is a wonderful support system!

Boohill, hopefully you find the whole first couple of days as hilarious as I have... I think laughing a lot is the key, otherwise the horror sets in LOLOL.

Really though, I didn't find it that bad but definitely a shocker. There feels like about 200lbs of stuff in your mouth, so a person needs to relearn how to talk, close your mouth, drink, eat... it's pretty funny :)

You had a question somewhere else about brushing? (Or I could be hallucinating, which is likely) If you did, I don't find brushing painful in terms of sore-teeth-from-moving, but I did have quite a bit of sensitivity on my teeth from that stuff they paint on before putting the glue on. It opens the pores of your enamel or something (? I was blocking out info at that point LOL) and I find that my teeth are sensitive around the brackets still and that hurts to brush. Other than that, I can still use my sonicare so not too bad (yet). The nightly ritual takes about 1000 years though, so that's an adjustment!

It will be your turn really soon - before you know it! :P

My kids are all out of college and they have been happy to see Mom do this as they had braces, too!

Hi Boohill,

Congrats on your braces decision, I will be getting braced on Nov 30'th I believe. Glad to find someone so close to my date to share the drama with, I think we will only be about two weeks apart! I haven't fully decided on which to get, but I am leaning towards metal for both top and bottom, I like the colors. :). I am sentenced to 10-12 months, but only because I have been doing Invisalign for almost 4 years and have finally decided to give up on them as they have made my bite pretty bad now. I went with a general dentist for Invisalign so that is why I haven't been switched to braces before now.. Finally quite the denial and went to an ortho consult to get the ball rolling.. Can't wait!!

Hey Desert Rose
I also want to play around with colors too. Sorry your invisilign experience didn’t go too well but I'm glad you are still pursuing a beautiful smile. I plan to have these teeth for a long time and I want them to be pretty and healthy. My ortho told me 24 months. I am still extremely excited to be getting braces. I wish I could think about something else. I’m sure it will get old once they are on. Maybe we can entertain each other once we are brace faced :-#) . I’m looking forward to following your story. :-1

I just got my braces on Monday so I am here with you too! Good luck!

It has been a tough week for me but I am trying to stay positive. I am finally starting to chew some soft pasta today, I can't stand another bowl of soup.

Hi Boohill :D ...& to any of you in or out of braces right now. I think that it's an interesting part of the process that a person goes through during the orthodontic experience - the social aspect. There's the initial reaction that a person has when they first see & feel the braces in their own mouth...then dealing with other people's reactions to them. After the "break-in period" the more confident the person is of course, the less they notice other people's reactions to their braces. I had braces in my late 20s (metal-top & bottom). When I first got them on, I remember focusing on people's reactions to the hardware. After a while though, I stopped noticing...it's just a confidence thing. Now 23 years later, I'm mentally preparing for the whole thing again. My first ortho consult is coming up this friday (nov 20). Even though this will be the second time in my life for this, I'm still just as nervous & excited as I remember being the first time - maybe more. I'm curious to see when I'm braced up this time, if that confidence will emerge earlier on because of the familiarity of it all...

Just checking in to see how the waiting is going!! You must be getting pretty excited! :) My sentence is 24 months too.

Someone else noted this website http://www.braceplaceusa.com/color.asp where you can muck around with lig colors... thought it was pretty funny

Hi there,

In your first post you wrote that you were "planning on getting..." do you know for a fact that you are going to need ligs? I ask this only because I thought I would, then the ortho went with self litigating brackets. A bit of a dissapointment at first.

I forgot who posted the link where you can test the ligs...but even though I don't have them, it was fun to mess around. Thanks. :)

Colors Colors Colors..

#27 Post by Desert Rose »

Hey Boohill,

Do you know what your first colors will be? I am thinking about red and green because it will be December, but I'm not sure if I am that brave yet, and then might have the colors until the end of January too. I am starting to be a little nervous thinking of all the stuff I have coming up in the next year that I will now have braces for, but I guess there would always be something no matter when you do it..

I totally understand not being able to think about anything else, I am so excited/nervous. If it wasn't for being busy with work and grad school as well I would never get off this site!!

Oh I also posted some before Invisalign and current pics under the "our braces" section ( I believe hitting my little www key will also take you directly there) if you are interested. I definitely plan on being a picture poster throughout my journey because I love seeing everyone else's progress as well.

Well, happy counting down to brace day!

Congrats on setting a date to get braced!

Getting your braces on will probably be a bit of a shock at first but you will adjust quickly. When I joined this site, I was a wreck. I hated my teeth but also hated the idea of braces. After I went through with it, I thought I would never get used to them and that I'd live on this website. I actually just signed in today for the first time in a while because I don't think about my braces that much. I know they're there every day but they don't neccessarily bug me. Now that I signed in to here and saw my "ticker" saying I've had braces for 8 months and 1 week, I'm like "WHAT?!?!?! NO WAY!!" Time flew by. You WILL get used to your braces! The hardest part is waiting to get them on and the first few days until you get used to yourself in braces. :)
