67 years and newly braced

#1 Post by Ejvind »

First og all, thank you very much - all og you. For the last month I have been at ArchWired nearly every day. It has given me so many good an positive advises for the process. Good to know that I am not alone with my problems.
For some years I have had problems with tooth- and headaches, but first in September this year did I get the idea to consult an orthodontic. After an examination he was quite sure that he could help me, and after a week I was with braces. I am a man 67 years old.
The mail reason for my situation is that i have a very deep bite. My lower front teeth and canines bite rather hard at the backside of my upper front teeth and canines. Some of the front teeth are also rather crooked.
I got braced upper in September and lower this week. As i don't think I have any reason to hide that I am braced it is all in metal. Perhaps it also might inspire other adults to carry out the same process. Until now I have only got very positive comments to my new metal look. Nearly every day my wife supports me by telling - with a smile - that I look quite cute wih my braces. My wife also tells me how obvious it is to see how much the teeth have moved already.
It is a smaller problem with the braces that my upper lip glides up over the upper brace, which means that my mouth is nearly always a little open, and it makes me very dry in the mouth. When I get tired my voice gets a little indistinct and it even happens that I get a slide lisp. What can I do?
From the first day my main problem has been eating. As the front teeth and canines are very sore I can't bide. As the molars only are touching each orther in a few points I can hardly chew. Some days it is so difficult, that it costs med great efforts to get enough to eat. The result is that I am still losing weight and am now just weighing 147 pounds (My heigt is more than 6 foot) What can I do?

If you are losing weight it might be a good idea to supplement what you are eating with milkshake meal replacements. That way you will make up for the calories you are no longer getting.

Congratulations on getting braced.

This is so great, the attitude of both you and your wife are truly remarkable! I hope you have an easy braces journey! Regarding your weight loss, I would just say that you could try having real food in melted form but whatever you find better for you will work. Good luck!

Hi there,

First off, congratulations!

When my teeth are hurting me, I eat foods like spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, enchilada's, oatmeal with fruit (cut up really small or put through the food processor), applesauce...etc. I try to eat stuff that won't be too painful on the teeth that can chew. Don't forget ice cream, you might even consider protein shakes.

Good luck!

For the mouth getting dried out, drink lots of water and carry a water bottle with you. Soup is easy to eat. Many cooked foods can be pureed in a blender or food processor. It is common to lose weight in the beginning, but most people will gain it back in a few months.

Good for you to get braces at your age. I have also had issues with clenching and headaches. The clenching has improved for me. I still get headaches, but they seem somewhat less frequent and less severe.

Er du dansker, Ejvind? Tillykke! Well done for getting braces. The dry mouth will pass and I would second the protein shakes suggestion for keeping your calorie intake up. It will get better!

Eating (or not)

#8 Post by Saysee »

The best advice I got after my TMJ surgery, which required three months of no chewing, and then three months of soft foods, was to get a hand-held immersion blender. You can puree a lot of things. (In restaurants, if I asked the waitstaff to have the chef puree a soup they said no. But if you ask the manager, they say yes.)

Also, mashed potatoes, mashed hard-boiled eggs and other things are good mixers. Fish, surprisingly, doesn't have to be chewed. I got the "I-Can't-Chew Cookbook" and "The Braces Cookbook" which had good advice, but I didn't use the recipes very much. It was just easier to heat up soup and then puree it for anything in the soup that needed chewing. I also poured my soup over bread to soften it. (I got teased a little about my soup sandwiches.)

When things were just painful or overwhelming, I used the meal replacement shakes. The recipes from my oral surgeon's office all started with 2 scoops of ice cream(!), so I didn't use those.
Never bite when a growl will do.

Braces at age 67

#9 Post by SilverPam »

You're not alone! My mother had braces at age 68, and that was 18 years ago. I had them last year at age 53, but I've heard of people in their 70s doing it. Regarding soft foods, the hints that others have given are good. You can also look at the "sticky" list of soft food cookbooks that is near the top of the main page of the Metal Mouth Forum (it doesn't scroll away, so you'll always see it there). Best wishes - I'm so glad I had my traditional braces and my husband thought it made me look younger.

67 years and newly braced (with pictures)

Many thanks for all of your comments and good advises. They have been very usefull. As to the question about my nationality, yes I am Danish an lives in Denmark. In Denmark a lot of children an teenagers wear braces, but it is not common to see adults with braces. Good to know that I am not the only braced form Denmark at ArchWired.
I still have some days where my s-sounds give med problems. My wife still tells me that it sounds rather cute. I am still eating soft food. For the last months I have been eating more mast potatoes than in al my life. We have introduced a new word at home - "boejlemad" - (brace food).
I have tried to attach two pictures. The first is from my very first day with braces. The second three and a half month later. If I do not succeed with the attachment of pictures, I will try again later.
It is my hope that the difference between the two pictures may convince anyone who is considering to get braced that it is actually possible even at an age of +60. I also hope the last picture will show that there is no reason attempting to hide the braces. I am proud og my metal braces with the blue elastics and I have entirely had positive comments.

Hats off to you for taking the plunge at 67 and being so positive!

It's great movement you got there within 3 months, pretty amazing how braces do your teeth huh? :)

I always think of that and cant believe how these brackets move your teeth in a way that you wouldn't thought possible, just because I'm so used to seeing my teeth in misaligned position for 27 of my life !

I can't believe the movement you've had in such a short time! Congratulations
