loose teeth from palatial expander

#1 Post by mdbo »

I have had my expander in 3 months and finished all my turns - 30 in total - 1 every 2 days. However my teeth are very very tilted outwards and i cannot put my teeth together anymore, but the oddest thing is my first two molars on one side feel loose - even when I talk - is this normal - dr rick do you know? or anyone else experienced this? I am going into the orthodontist on monday to check as I have been on holidays and I am concerned. Anyone out there with a palatial expander and tilted and loose feeling teeth?

I turned the key to my expander 3 times a week, than only 2 times a week...all this for 2 months. By my calculation, I believe I expanded about 6 mm. I had 2 appointments during that time, and every time I left the office, the ortho told me to turn the key such and such until my next appointment. During the time that I didn't see the ortho(was about a month between appointments), I noticed that my molars on the left side were tilted outwards, and I just decided on my own not to make anymore turns until I go see the ortho. So, I did not do my turns for about 1 1/2 weeks...because I was worried. Then, my appointment came, (I didn't tell my ortho that I didn't do my turns), and when he looked at my teeth, he said NO MORE TURNS, he said that I expanded enough. I asked him if that tilting was OK? and he said that it was OK and that they always over expand a little bit, because when the expander comes out, the teeth relapse a little bit.
So, my opinion is that tilting is not bad, although I don't know how much yours tilted. I can tell you one thing, my molars never felt loose. I say, if you have any more turns left until your appt, don't make them.

It is not uncommon for the teeth to feel loose.
They do overexpand to allow for rebound.

This is a sitution I would just ask the doc about.

FWIW, 1 turn is generally 1/4mm

Thanks Felecia and Dr Rick - I feel better knowing it is normal for the tilting and the loose teeth... I am going to pop in to see my ortho tomorrow to make sure all is ok. I finished all my turns about 3 weeks ago and have to wait to march to get the braces fitted - its that busy - should have been in feb - so i am really looking foward to it and getting my teeth back to a better position. I think I have definately overexpanded on one side but I guess it makes more room.... It only started to feel and look too tilted in one tooth during the last 4 turns - my teeth look very odd
