At first, my teeth were so sore, I couldn't eat anything but pasta and ice cream for almost a month. Then I broke a bracket off eating Chex Mix, and I got really paranoid about eating crunchy stuff, even though it didn't really hurt anymore. Now, almost 14 months later, I've worked up to eating almost everything--apples (without the skin), chips, pretzels, even raw carrots. I find salad is the worst--it really gets stuck. I actually ate popcorn at the movie the other day. It was so good! Nuts are a trick, but I eat them once in a while because I love them. So far I haven't broken another bracket. And I couldn't survive without my little tiny brushes to get the food out. I have very small teeth, and my brackets are very close together. I would never get all the debris out without them.
The hull-less ladyfinger popcorn is awesome. Better than awesome, because it means I can continue to eat popcorn and smuggle popped bags into movie theaters while in braces. I just make sure I floss afterward and always leave a little in the bottom of the hopper so I don't get the unpopped of half-popped kernels.
I've never given a passing thought to breaking the braces, but my problem is my bite isn't as solid and strong and it's only on one side that I feel any tenderness. I feel like a weekling.
I guess I just have to chew slower and much longer
8/Jan/10 Wired up, but no place to go
4/May/10 Full upper & lower brackets put on
I am in my first week of braces and I am so starved... I am craving everything, even food I would have never touched prior to braces. I long for the day that I can bite into a big juicy cheeseburger or a meatlover's pizza!! UGH! The lack of food has made me lose 8 pounds already, which is wonderful
I mostly eat anything I want but I do it carefully. As for popcorn, I'm too chicken to try that. The only thing I really miss is being able to chomp down on anything that requires the use of biting into something with my front teeth. I have a fake tooth attached to the wire and that sucker would come flying out if I tried to bite into anything. I hate cutting my food up and the fact that I get teased because I eat slowly.
I can pretty much eat anything I like. The only thing I haven't touched in a while is chewy candy and gum. I tried chewing gum with braces once; not a good idea. It's not so much the food I miss, but the ability to bite into food. Everything has to be cut into small pieces.
I eat just about anything I ate before. Nuts popcorn..no brackets broken or anything in 16 months. I've even tried red licorice--was able to eat it, just too much mess to clean out of my braces. Caramels are great, just have to suck them rather than chew them if they are hard. The only thing I really really miss is biting into apples instead of having to cut them up into pieces.
And I miss curry because I don't want to risk that horrible yellow stain.
I didn't even attempt to eat a hamburger until maybe week 4 or 5. At that point, I was craving one really bad. The only problem I still have is getting pieces of the bun stuck behind the wires but it is so worth it!
I was really careful about what I ate in the beginning but now, week 18, I am still careful but there isn't anything I won't eat, besides things like caramel or taffy. I can eat mostly everything as long as I am careful and chew slowly.
You know what's funny, speaking of apples. I am really looking forward to biting apples again, not because I'm omg such an apple lover (though I like them), but because when I used to bite apples it would be so hard because my teeth were tilted back and the imprint of my teeth would be all jagged and crooked. I'm going to be able to bite into an apple with a nice straight arch and I won't have to torque my jaws to get my teeth into it!
I agree about the apple thing! It's not that I don't eat pretty much anything that I ate before, it's just HOW i want to eat the food that is the problem. I can't wait to not have to cut up everything I eat. Well, I did try corn on the cob though. It can be done, but is so messy!
The only thing I can think of that I would LOVE to be able to eat again without any issues would be Riesen - the really chewy chocolate candies! They are my favorite and though I've tried to eat them, I can't chew them and they still manage to get stuck on my braces, so I've only tried a couple of times. They didn't break anything, but I'm sure they could if I tried to chew them. Love those things....and I'm pregnant and they sound really good right now.....
I really eat whatever I want except caramel, and gummy bears/gummy candy. I will eat Twix because I dont chew it but no snickers or anything like that.
