Uppers and lowers at the same time?

#1 Post by ChristyD »

Hi everyone :D I'm 30 and just got braces for the first time on 2/9/10.

My teeth aren't too crooked but they are crowded and I have a really deep bite. They gave me an estimation of 14 to 18 months for treatment. My OD put both uppers and lowers on me at the same time with no appliances to prevent me from knocking the lower brackets off. I have been reading lots of posts here and it seems like most people with a deep bite problem only get uppers at first, or they get some sort of additional appliance. I'm just wondering if anyone knows why this wouldn't apply in my situation?? Is it just the preference of the OD? I haven't had any problems so far which is surprising to me as I am a grinder. It's also really annoying because my molars don't touch all the way so I can't chew like I used to.

Let me know your thoughts.

I have the exact problems as you. Crowded, overbite, and I'm a grinder. I got both tops and bottoms on the first day. He also put little blue dots on my back teeth to help them touch before my front brackets do. They help a little but mainly just mess up the way I have to chew haha. Anyways 2 weeks in and I haven't had any problems with breakage... even at night which is surprising because he told me I can't sleep with my mouth guard so I was for sure I would pop one of those babies off!.

ChristyD I would say that you probably also have enough of an overjet that you are not in danger of hitting your lower brackets with your top teeth while the ortho is leveling your upper teeth. It should not take too long. I also had a dep bite, but since this is my second time in braces I had a good overjet so I was stuck with bite turbos. Fortunetly they were removed at my first adjustment because my deep bite was corrected enough that I was no longer in danger of biting my lower brackets.

Thank you both for replying.

The OD says I do have a slight overjet, but the thing is I am not able to close my mouth (or bite?) all the way because my upper teeth hit the lower brackets. Here is a picture I took yesterday. It's crappy quality but you can see my uppers sitting on the brackets.

I was wondering why my OD wouldn't do something to make sure I couldn't bite down on them like that. Kind of like Jambo has the blue dots. I'm sure I could bite down hard enough to knock them right off so I try to be really careful which is especially annoying when trying to eat.
