Just got my 1st adjustment 3 days ago...

#1 Post by bitdot »

and it has not hurt AT ALL! My front two teeth are a little tiny bit sore, but I've had that since I got the braces on 1 month ago.

Is it normal if I don't hurt after an adjustment? He changed the wire and I think it's a little thicker than the wire prior, but not 100% sure. Could just be my imagination...

When I got the archwire on last month, I was in pain for a good week!

Should I go back and see if they need to tighten it more?

Thanks everyone! :D

Hi bitdot :D

I wouldn't bother your ortho about it. The discomfort following adjustments varies, and doesn't usually come close to when you first get your braces on. I remember this from my first experience with braces years ago. Now I'm braced again and I just had my first adjustment as well. My wire was not replaced - only the ligatures. The ortho assistant explained that the ligs (being elastics) lose their elasticity after a while. When they are replaced, the tension on the archwire is renewed. What I feel is an increase in tension, but no soreness really. It's all perfectly normal, though. 8)

I agree with Mikesmile! Its perfectly normal for some people to not feel as much pain after adjustments. Pain really varies on person and how their pain intolerance is as well. It could very well be that you just have a higher pain intolerance. For me, I had a lot of pain and discomfort for my first few adjustments and initially when I first had my braces on. After a while it was better and less painful. I think after a while you just begin to get used to the pain so it doesn't seem to bother you as much. Pain would also vary depending what they do at your adjustment (replace wire, new wire, put extra hardware on such as powerchains to close gaps, etc). So dont worry!!

My first adjustment didn't hurt very much other than a few sore teeth. After the first one I thought, "What are these people on AW talking about? This doesn't hurt at all." But my second adjustment was a bit more painful for a few days.

I think it just depends on what wire you are on and who does the adjustment. It did in my case at least.

braces don't hurt for everyone..for exemple, i didnt have pain when i got my braces, i didnt have after adjustments, after wire changes, not even after the extraction of a wisdom tooth

i asked my ortho at the beginning "why does it not hurt?" and she said that not all the people fell pain from braces

Thanks everyone!

I was all prepared to eat a few days worth of soft foods, but since I don't have any pain at all, I'm EATING!

:P

Maybe next month, I might feel something...until then, I'm just gonna enjoy a painless month!

Braces aren't so much tightened as adjusted.

The pain from braces isn't really the pressure, but instead the cells breaking down the structures that hold the tooth securely in place. The force applied by braces is actually very very minor and more pressure can actually be detrimental to progress.

Think about growing pains as a similar example of how remodeling tissues in your body is painful as the little cells eat away some parts and build others.

At least, this is how I understand it after our lectures on the tissue structures of teeth. I'm employing quite a bit of artistic license in the retelling, but the main point is that the pain isn't from the pressure, so you won't always have pain when pressure is applied.
