general anaesthetic while wearing braces (damons)

#1 Post by horriblebite »

I should be getting braced this year, but I am also due two operations - one of them being for divated septum which will require a general anaesthetic.
I just wondered if anyone else had experience of operations while wearing braces...especially sinus or nose operations. I'm guessing that being braced doesn't present a massive problem re general anaesthetic (I'm too squeemish to ask if they will be putting a tube down my throat..it's years since I had a GA)!

While I did not have a sinus or nose operation, I did have my appendix out while in braces, and yes, I did have a tube down my throat. No problems at all. (Best sleep I've ever had.)

Yes, I had a general anaesthetic whilst wearing braces (lingual). I had an operation to remove a very trickily placed impacted canine. No problems really - one of the brackets came off during the op as there was a limited amount of room for the surgeon to maneouvre given the brackets were on the inside of my teeth, but it didn't cause any problems and he very apologetically returned it to me once I came round.

I had the tube down my nose, but yes, you'll have yours down your throat. As TumbleDryLow said, best sleep ever.

I had general anaesthetic 1 month after getting braces when I had emergency surgery due to a bowel obstruction.

Also, there are many of us who are in braces that also require jaw surgery - which also means going under general anaesthetic.

had twilight (iv sedation) and ga whilst in braces. no real huge problems with ga but had some complications with some of the anti biotics I was on post jaw surgery. Once that was all figured out and switched around recovery was much better.

Most people have jaw surgery (orthognathic surgery) have to have ga otherwise itd be sooo painful (doesn't want to even think about it eshhhh). Its not really a huge problem and ga has become pretty safe nowadays!!!
