What do I eat during my first few weeks of being braced?

#1 Post by llehsal »

Hi all...so I'm about to get braced in a few weeks and I'm wondering what some of yall ate at that time....I'm vegan so I have to be quite careful of what I eat and drink....My breakfast is usually peanut butter sandwiches, or oatmeal, fruit, cereal and milk or just tea. Lunch is usually some sort of sandwich or rice with beans, veggies, starches like potatoes and that sorta thing....would I have problems eating these? Feedback appreciated :)

You should be good with that.

I never changed anything about the way i ate when i first got braced. I just chewed slowly and i didn't really bite all the way down. It took a little longer to eat and i am not gonna lie it was painful, but i wasn't willing to give up my grub! :D

You shouldn't have any trouble eating those foods:) You'll get a no no list of certain foods when you get braced, which consist of really sticky or hard treats. You'll have to cut up apples and cook your carrots but that's about it. Try taking some type of pain reliever, like advil, an hour before you're braced or have adjustments. It really helps me out. Also, you might want to invest in a waterpik. Its fantastic with getting food out of your brackets, especially those little bits of rice. Oh, and medicated chapstick is also very useful with dry lips. I like to put some on before my appointments since my lips can get alittle dry while they work on my teeth. Have fun on your brace day! :)

Hi,

you didn't mention if you eat eggs (I know some people who are vegan do and some don't...), but scrambled or boiled eggs are great, mashed potatoes are also very easy to eat. It does get easier...

My favorite foods for the first weeks included: yogurt (lots and lots), scrambled eggs (lots), oatmeal, ice cream (lots), mashed potatoes, and cottage cheese. Hope this helps. You'll get used to it pretty quickly.

I ate soft stuff the first few days (soup, etc) but now I eat anything I want that's not on the forbidden list...I just cut it into small pieces and eat with a fork (even a cheeseburger!) and eat slowly.

I must be a naughty girl, because I ate those things for the first 2 days... and then experimented with a piece of toast (not bad if it's softer), and since then I've been eating just about anything I did before (minus the no-no foods). There really isn't any pain; just some tenderness on the left because I'm on my 3rd round of spacers on one side. I didn't want to become too dependent on mushy foods that just slide down your throat because I wanted to get used to chewing again. It also think did help the discomfort to subside quicker.

If you do try to venture out and try non-soft foods, just go super-duper slowly. I found if I can't bite it after a few tries, I give it up. But Patty's right - you will get used to things quickly. And the fork suggestion is great, too.

My worst "bracket-clogging" culprite so far: A hamburger. It was soft enough for me to bite into, but oy vay... the bread and meat stuck in the front brackets was a nightmare!!

Oh Wow!!! sounds quite feasible :D

Cant have the eggs or yogurt..but i can certainly have the mashed potatoes and some of the other stuff...I can't wait to get my teeth on its way to perfection (or close to it)....but just thinking of getting that food in without the attached pain:S
