When I was 18 I had a veneer to cover my one crooked tooth (right one beside front tooth) which my parents paid for ($800). That seemed to do the trick until I realised my bite was changing when I was about 23. My dentist suggested I see an ortho to discuss braces - but we ended up discussing surgery! The next thing I know I'm booked in for SARPE (surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion) as my upper jaw was too narrow. 3 months after that my braces went on (7 months ago) and here I am now. I always sort of noticied my smile was narrower than normal but I learnt to live with it since my teeth were pretty straight. It wasnt until I couldnt bite properly anymore that I went to seek advice. I'm so glad I took the plunge because I now have the smile I always wanted :D Oh and I'm 25 and paying for it myself. My parents probably would have paid for it someone told them I needed all of this! Ah well, they paid for enough in my opinion.

Avy:
I checked your blog......

My goodness what amazing progress! You're going to have such a great result. I think you're only going to become happier with the results as you get closer to the end.

Mike
I wore braces (this time) for 1294 days or 3 years, 6 months and 17 days.
But who's counting?

My decision to finally get them was two fold. First, I wanted to have "perfect" teeth, finally. (LOL, I know that's a pipe dream...) Secondly, my girlfriend's youngest has really messed up teeth and needs to have phase one done. He was a bit apprehensive during his consultation, so, since I was thinking about getting braces anyway, I decided to get mine on before him so he feels better about them when he gets them next month. He thinks my braces look really cool.

I didn't actually CHOOSE to get them done now, I wanted them done many years ago. I'm 18 in 2 days, so I'm still a teenager anyway really. But I got them now because I was on the NHS waiting list for years (get them free if they allow), and I was nearly 18 so I pretty much assumed I'd have to pay for them...

..then I got a phone call saying I'm ready for treatment!! 2 months before my birthday! I'm so lucky... I would have struggled paying for it so much. I got them because my bite is wrong and overcrowding and such.

Yay! I get them in 3 weeks, so happy and relieved. :D

I always needed braces as far back as I could remember, but we had no money growing up, so I have always had REALLY crowded top teeth . My boyfriend and I bought a house and got the 1st time home buyers credit and put it toward my teeth.

I chose to get them done at age 24 because my teeth looked like this:

I wish I had gotten them earlier, but now, at 48, is the time. I wish I could say I finally have the money, because I don't...but the ortho had a decent payment plan that I will be paying well after my braces are off!

I would be happier if I did not need them, it is not a choice for me, unless I wanted a huge gap in the front of my smile...huge....can't wait for the gap to go away, it is the only reason I have these things, otherwise, my teeth were pretty straight! Only 2 years to go!!![/b]

I got them because at 31 I've already lost 5 teeth (4 root canals, one extraction), and if I don't take care of them now, I'll lose even more as I get older.

I got them *now* because now as an adult I can afford them, when growing up, it wasn't even a financially remote option.

why

I decided to get braces because dentists have been telling me since I was 9 that I needed them, but my mom said I looked fine and didn't want to waste her money. So, I've wanted them for a long time, but never looked into it until now when I fully realized the extent of my problems. I just have a little crookedness and a gap, but my main problems are an overbite, an overjet, and jaw alignment problems that have been causing me to suffer from frequent headaches for the last 21 years of my life.

I just popped over to your blog Avy! Wow, what a difference the SARPE/expander made lol. Your smile looks beautiful already :)

As far as WHY I decided to get braces as an adult - and then do it again... well, same boat as a lot of folks. Parents either couldn't afford it or they chose to spend the money on other things. One thing I am not happy about looking back is private school. If I could have chosen I'd have said 'send me to public school, I'll survive that, I'd rather have healthy, functional, straight teeth than go to a private school where people THINK you get a better education but really you're just exposed to a bunch of stuck up people who think they're better than the general public because their parents shelled out several thousand dollars a YEAR so they can go to school there...'

Sorry. I'm not bitter or anything, it was just a rotten experience and in my opinion a waste of money better spent elsewhere lol. I definitely am not sending any of my kids to a private school, but when my youngest needs braces - as she will, she will get them while she is still young. Then she won't have to go through self esteem issues, problems with her bite or function of teeth, cracked or chipped teeth, headaches or jaw pain, and of course having to come up with the funds to fix her teeth when she is 20, 30, 40, or 50 years old lol.
