I got my braces on 2 days ago, and I ate steak before I had them on, although I also had 2 extractions afterwards too. :D I'm still finding it difficult to eat lots of foods, so I'm not sure what I will be able to eat when I get used to it... but I miss eating popcorn already - I love popcorn!! :(

As for advice, I didn't prepare much to be honest, but you should definitely buy all your dental supplies (toothpaste, mouthwash, floss etc). I bought a starter kit from the ortho which included lots of things for cleaning braces.

Good luck!

Pink Frost-

I have the DentaKit that I keep in my purse for while I'm at work and when I eat out, and it's WONDERFUL! You'll still need to buy extra things like little toothpastes, floss threaders, or proxy brushes to replenish what you use. But the case, and the folding cup are awesome.

Yeah, steak would be a biggie, as well as corn on the cob, and apples (whole ones - although you can eat them cut up later when you get the braces). Popcorn, I suppose, but I'll tell a secret... I've eaten popcorn with my braces on, and had no problems. I ate them one piece at a time... very slowly... and anything that felt too hard to bite got tossed. I was just overly diligent in rinsing and cleaning afterward. I've also eaten pizza, but not the crust part. (Hope my ortho doesn't see this...) (Don't follow my bad habits.)

As for preparation: Get a good night's sleep and take some ibuprofen before you go to the ortho. Most importantly - relax. The bracing process was a piece of cake. Honestly, I've had more anxiety and discomfort getting fillings and cleanings. Have your "soft foods" ready for the first few days. Most of all... enjoy this experience. You're already going into it with a positive attitude, and that will carry you very far! :D

Good luck to you! You must be so excited!

Wow, cool so I can still eat popcorn .. if I am careful. :) I've also heard cheetos are bad to eat, is that true?

Thanks Pinkfrost. I'm not sure what else we can/can't eat, because I'm still new to braces, so far I'm just eating soft food.

I have spacers now so I'm eating yogurt etc. I will be braced on Monday. Last week I ate swedish fish, salt water taffy, and sponge candy. I will really miss sponge candy (can you just imagine trying to get that off the braces)!

Cheetos: The puffy ones are deceiving. I thought I could get by with those, but they turned out to be worse than popcorn. (1) They're hard to chew, and (2) Most of the cheeto ended up stuck in every single bracket, nook and cranny of my mouth. Almost nothing ended up down my throat. I had to literally DIG it out of my teeth, especially my crowns. Ugh - never again. :(

I ate ribs right before i got my braces on. They were gooood.
The regular cheetos are a little hard for eating while braces, and the puffy ones do stick all over your mouth, its kind of gross. I have the RediBreeze, which is like a waterpik, and i use that after every meal. Much easier than picking stuff out of my teeth. Kind of like powerwashing.
I tried eating steak after i was braced, but the 20 minutes of flossing afterwards really sucks...so its not really worth it.
After a couple weeks i'm back to eating most everything. But i really miss gummy bears....love those little things.
Good luck!

I still eat popcorn. Going to the movies feels so empty without popcorn. I just steer clear of the hard bits, and clean my teeth well when I get home.

I find it really hard to eat a burger when my teeth are sore. And I love Twisters from KFC, mainly for the Twister sauce. So I went to KFC and asked for crispy strips with some Twister sauce in a little tub so I can pull the chicken apart and dip it in the Twister sauce. But noooo, they're "not allowed" to do that. I explained that I can't eat a Twister because of my braces and my teeth hurt, but NOOOO they refused. So I asked if they could squeeze some of the Twister sauce on top of the strips, but NOOOO it's against OHS rules. So I got said fine, I don't want anything, and left.

Anyway, I can eat most things, but when it comes to adjustment time, it's soup and mashed potatoes for me.

You should be able to eat steak with braces. I find that pork really clogs up my brackets. My ortho gave me tons of freebies, but I especially like the small gadget with a rubber tip on one end and a small pipe-cleaner like brush on the other end. Good to get that stuck pork and other items out of the brackets.

Well i'm about to be braced soon as well and I wont be able to have many things. I'm from the Caribbean and we have several delicacies that I'm not allowed to have as they are all very hard, acid or a mixture of both... So I will be have those foods galore for now :)
