check pain caused by lower brackets - is this normal?

#1 Post by newbie »

I've had braces for a little over a year. For the first year I had a herbst appliance. That was finally removed two weeks ago.

I had brackets put on my upper and lower back teeth to replace the metal caps from the herbst.

Two weeks later I still find it hard to close my jaw all the way. Also there are two rough places developing on the inside of my cheek where the very back lower brackets are rubbing. Since it's in the same place on both sides of my mouth I'm assuming that it's not caused by something breaking.

Is this normal? Maybe my mouth is still trying to get used to the new equipment? I was going to call the ortho but I don't want to go into the office (and miss work) if this is normal.

If you don't see or feel anything obviously out of place then it's probably normally rubbing and wax is your best friend in that case. From personal experience and from what others have said on here, your mouth will "toughen" up and these painful spots will heal up and become less frequent.

I've had my braces for just over a month now and in the beginning I had several spots I had to keep wax on pretty much around the clock (only removing it to eat). Now I only need it now and again.

It does get better! Hang in there...
