I had the same thing happen between my bottom front teeth. It was getting bigger and bigger, so my ortho tied the teeth together with some sort of orthodontic string (I'm sure there's a more technical term!). The gap closed up within about 20 minutes (no joke) and it was terrifically sore for a few days. But worth it!
My front teeth overlapped before I got braces, the more my arch widened and the more my teeth straightened out the bigger the gap got. My ortho did give me a power chain and it did close the gap up, thankfully!
