overbite seems more pronounced now

#1 Post by believer1964 »

i have a deep overbite with tipped top 2 front teeth. they are moving outwards fast, which is making my chin more receded looking and overbite worse. i can really tell it pics now. top braces making my top lip look like had plastic surgery too.

is this normal to look like this before things improve? I took a picture of me and i look awful. i can see where my teeth are lining up and not tipping in as much.

i just got braces wednesday and doc said my top teeth were going to move fast .

I need some encouragement.

It's Normal

Don't worry.....I posted the same question about a month ago. My top teeth did and are still doing the same thing (although not as dramatically now- been in braces for 2 1/2 months). A forum member told me that the first portion of treatment consists of the ortho. pulling the teeth outward to line up with the other teeth; this is probably what you are seeing now. My front 2 teeth tipped inward also and my ortho "pulled them up" to meet with other teeth. Once everything is lined up then they can start with the heavier wires and begin applying more torque for different movement.

As far as apperance goes....some days are good with little lip and teeth protrusion and some days I feel like a rabbit with an overinflated lip! I figure these things will eventually work themselves out - it's the waiting that's so hard!

Cheer up, this is all a weird process, but at least we have this great forum to go to for answers!

I have to stop using lipgloss

helps to minimize the top lip to not make it as full and swollen looking..

i hope it is all worth it. i hated my smile before i got braces.

I agree. On the days my lip is "normal" I feel much more confident and able to articulate myself better. Fat lip days are no fun; I'm a teacher so I have to ennuciate everything I say!

I heard that it gets worse before it gets better.

I heard the exact same thing. Just wonder how long the "worse" part lasts!

your first responder said it correctly. unless they extracted.. they will stick out first. b/c they have to line up everything and get rid of rotations first. so, in that process, unless you have teeth extracted or if you have a lot of gaps anyways, your teeth have nowhere to go but out ... so until this part of your braces is finished, you'll have to live with more protrusive teeth.

and THEN.. if an overbite is what you're trying to correct, you'll have to get something else done to push them back... like extracting, or IPL. but IPL will only do minimal pushing back. In many cases, if you had a lot of rotations and overlapping teeth and whatnot, ipl will push your teeth back but not significantly and you might be back to square one.

Actually, I had an extraction and it still seemed as though eveything was pulled forward (probaby because my front 4 teeth went opposite of each other). Looking forward to normalcy in the future!

braceup - I noticed you're in your 4 month of treatment and still dealing with the fat lip issue. Did you ortho say when lip thing would start to go away?
