Vertical Elastics for braces

#1 Post by Nyrand »

Ok my ortho put vertical elastics on my teeth and a bent archwire on my top teeth and I have a small overbite and he told me to wear them 24/7 and I wear them like 23 hours a day and I brush my teeth 4 to 5 a times a day and change them everytime I eat and I suppose to get my braces off this spring but I wear them all the time and take care of my teeth and I can feel my teeth biting down perfectly and I have just got my elastics a month now could anybody tell me is my time going to be shorter or will it take that long or what he will do afterwards? Thank you

It's very possible that your treatment will be shorter.
When I first got my elastics, my ortho told me that the progress depends only on me and how disciplined I am wearing them.
A few months later, at a consult, he looked on the computer screen and it showed that I have 9 months to go....but he looked at me and said that it looks more like 6 months to go....I WAS SO HAPPY TO HEAR THAT.

Hi - I just got my first elastic - I have been doing the same, trying to leave it on as long as possible. I am hoping by doing that things will go more quickly.

I did hear if you don't wear them for a day, two days progress is lost. Also it's important to put fresh ones in everyday because they stretch. I would love it if I can cut a few weeks/months off my 23 month treatment.

I heard it's more like a week...if you don't wear your elastics for one day, it sets you back a whole week.
I changed my elastics 4-5 times a day, depending on how many times I eat, and sometimes if I open my mouth too big, I hear them stretching and breaking a little bit, so I change them.

I might start putting more fresh ones in!

Does wearing more than one at a time speed things up? Or would it just mean that you would get incorrect movement?

I wouldn't double up on them unless I was told to, I actually did that once and it moved a tooth too far. I figured you can't have too much of a good thing - I was wrong lol.

Vertical Bands

#10 Post by Bracy »

I have vertical bands and the bend archwire like you mentioned I believe, but only have it for a couple of weeks now. I am supposed to wear them 24/7 and I wear them as much as possible, but since I can't talk or open my mouth when they are on, sometimes I have to take them out to work and can't wear them all the time. It's been pretty painful but I can already see big improvements...Let's see what my Ortho says next time I see him.
