Hi there!
I'm extremely new to this site. I just found out yesterday that I have to get braces; top and bottom. I'm going with the Damon system, and getting the clear "social six" on the top. I have severe over crowding of my upper and lower jaws.
I was devastated when I found out. I'm 24 and in graduate school. I'm most concerned about dating. Super shallow, I know. But I feel like at this age, guys are still concerned with how you look, and they're going to see my mouth and immediately be turned-off. I know it's stupid, but I'm insecure enough as it is...this isn't exactly going to help.
Anyway, I guess just a question to the 20-somethings on here...do you find that your braces have had an impact on your dating life?
Really glad I found this site...it's making me feel a lot better about things.
I'm 24...and getting braces...again!

as im in a long term relationship it had a little impact as i was in some pain after adjustments
but my boyfriend understands that
and as i noticed, myself being 28, people around me admire my decision and congratulate me for it
new people i meet tend to remember me at once, since there arent a lot of adult in braces around here
so socially speaking i've had seen a positive attitude towards my courage and decision...i now smile a lot and think that braces are my "bling"

yes. However there some guys and girls out there that won't mind.
But don't worry, after a couple of years, you will have a beautiful smile everyone won't be able to resist.

I'm 23 and married. I know it's not the same as being single. I am completely vain (proud of it, woot woot) and most days I don't even realize I have them. You just kind of build your self confidence back up. right after I got my braces, I went and got my hair done. Cut, color, the works. It helps to do little things for yourself to rebuild the confidence you lose. Now that I sound like Dr. Phil, I will tell you it gets better I promise.

You are improving your smile for *you.* If, heaven forbid, someone didn't want to go out with you because you have braces... Well... Let's just say having braces might be a great way for you to weed out the "throw-aways" vs. "the keepers."
I should've gotten rebraced at 24. I dumbly waited until I was 42. Fortunately, I found a wonderful wife 10 years ago who didn't care how screwy my teeth were

As a girl, I've found some guys actually LIKE braces. My friend Aaron stared at me when I first had them and had a hard time talking to me... I was upset and asked him, 'what you can't talk to me now that I have braces?' And he told me, he had trouble talking to me because he thought they were hot...
Also, I always say, 'like the rap star, all my money's in my mouth'... guys know you're (probably) financially stable if you have braces and not a 'gold digger'
I really feel I've got more attention since I've had braces from men. It might just be that now I'm much more confident because I know I'm doing something about the mess in my mouth

I agree with bracesat14...I am on my 2nd set of braces...first got them when i was 15 and now i am 26. When i was 15 i had an ex boyfriend that absolutely LOVED them...he thought they were so hot! it's weird, i know. My fiance doesn't like them too much...BUT he also says he doesn't notice them for the most part. I have ceramic color braces. Some people notice right away and some don't. I don't think it is a big deal. One of my coworker's (girl) loves them...she says they look HOT...it's odd to me...but hey it works to build self esteem
good luck and go for it.
