From one bad habit to another!

#1 Post by soultattoo »

I'm 48, just got braces on about 10 weeks ago. Have seen good progress so far and am very happy. Just one concern. I used to bite my lip all the time and now that the braces are on it's impossible - which is a good thing - however, now I've started a new habit, always rubbing my tongue up under the top front brackets! It seems that so far this is not affecting my progress but I'm just wondering if other people have developed habits with the braces on? I'm hoping after they're off I don't start something else! UGH!

Well I'm constantly rubbing my tongue over the brackets looking for food to dislodge. I'm sure it's REALLY attractive but I cannot help it for the life of me. I'm sure that habit will disappear when my braces are off. What new habits form when I get my retainer is yet to be seen, though....

I do the same! It probably looks really really disgusting.

I've got a wire power chain and it's cutting my tongue if I poke it around my top front braces!! It's like a paper cut, but on the tongue. Annoying, but it prevents me from rubbing!

I did the same thing. The pressure on my teeth from biting my lip felt good. Even though my braces are off, I am still doing it. Good thing I get my retainer on Tuesday!

I had that problem for a while in the first few weeks because I had teeth removed and that wire went right across the gap and I'd run my tongue over it and it felt like I got cut! UGH! That was very frustrating! Now that the teeth are slowly coming together AND the wires got changed to something that feels thicker it's much better!

I had two teeth, top & bottom, that worked together when I was biting my lip. Since they've moved it's not working like it did and I'm so glad. But I know me, I'll develope another habit! The first thing I'm looking forward to when these braces are off is chewing gum!!! Well, chewing anything comfortably, but gum especially. That helps curb the biting for a while. :D

I'm constantly exploring all the prongs & wires with my tongue, to the point where I annoy myself. :-) When people say they've forgotten they have braces, I'm envious. I can't forget they're there at *all*.

Same here. Only when I sleep do my teeth and tongue get a rest! Haha!
