Bite plate

Hi, I'm 17 and recently had braces put on, and also a bite plate to correct my overbite. The bite plate is really uncomfortable and hurts (pushes against my front teeth). If the bite plate is only there to stop me closing my jaw completely, could I not wear it and just keep my jaw open myself, but then put it in at night so that my jaw doesn't close completely?

I don't know anything about bite plates. There is a reason he gave you instructions on how to wear appliances. If you do your own thing, it might make things worse. You may not fully understand what the appliance is doing, what the purpose of it is, or why you have to wear it...ask your ortho to explain it better and you may feel better about having to wear it.

Is the bite plate similar to a retainer? I'm thinking of getting that instead of bite turbos or cement on my back molars.

Were you given an option?

Is it that horrible? I'm debating on either that or cement.

I wonder how you chose those options. I would like to correct my deep bite too. But my ortho does not seem to be bothered by my deep bite.
Are those bite plates effective at all? I heard here some people on these forum say they wore them for years and years and they did not do a thing

Those were the options given to me. Altho, my ortho wants to do the cement. I might try the bite plate first, then do the cement or vice versa. I'm still debating.

My deep bite is almost the entire reason why I'm getting braces... I have some other issues as well, but the deep bite is the BIG issue.

My 2nd appointment...it was cement for my overbite. Hate it! I'm getting use to it, but when the Ortho first adhered them to my back molars, I thought I had a small piece of Jolly Rancher candy stuck on my teeth. It's hard to really chew your food...so must time I chew the best I can, then swallow. What I find so amazing, is we will always find a way....mainly eating softer foods. I wasn't given an option. After the cement was placed on both molars, I thought to myself, what have I've done ! Is 2yrs of this mess really worth it...and after reading other comments, It Is!

I heard it does get better/easier with time. But yeah.. it takes awhile to get used to. I will probably get the cement as well, but it's going to drive me batty I know! Not being able to eat what I want. I'm going to miss my carrots! Do you have to have them the entire 2yrs? I was thinking/hoping it's only temporary. Must ask about that next time.

I would take the bite plate without any doubts. Cement is fine for retaining, but to fix the deep bite I think bite plate is more effective - I it rough to bite on cement - will wear out your lower teeth quite a bit I am afraid. Besides, it is not for long, right, for a month or too? so although bite plate feels more uncomfortable, I would still choose that.
How old are you? I am asking because I suspect I am too old for those things, may be? I am 35.
How deep is your bite? Are you already in braces?

I'm leaning towards the bite plate at the moment, but will ask my ortho when the time comes. Course, if it doesn't work as well.. she may overrule me.

I'm 36, so I don't think you're too old, since I'm older than you.

My deep bite is severe deep bite - my top teeth cover my bottom 100% and slant inwards. I'm going to try and take a picture later.. but my teeth are pretty straight. I have a slight misalignment on one side, but I would never have noticed it.

I get my top braces on Jan. 6th! I'm excited and slightly scared...
