Ouchine in my Mouthy! Check out this "bend" in my wire!

#1 Post by tori*anne »

Holy Moses.

Boy does this "bend" in my upper wire HURT like a mutha!
I've been waiting a year for my ortho to close my huge gap from where my baby tooth was extracted.
I was so excited to hear that yesterday was the day to finally make it happen. I was so expecting a pretty pink powerchain to work it's magic...
boy was I wrong.
He told me a power chain would never move the tricky canine tooth, and said something about the bone not moving.
So he took a super-duty THICK wire and bent it, and bent it and bent it.
I could feel something poking me in the gums when he was working around in there but I had no idea I would walk outta there with THIS!
Day two of eating nothing but mush... I hope the space closes up and QUICK. I want this bend in my wire GONE PLEASE!
Anyone else have this experience? How quickly will that gap close????
The power chains have worked wonders on my lower canines....grrr!

OMG I cannot imagine having that in my mouth. I had a gap in my lower teeth after having an extraction in 3/10 and have had power chains on. Last week he put a little bend in the wire, but nothing like what you have. I hope it gets a little more comfortable for you soon.

I have something similar, so I know how you feel. I'm still a little sore after almost 2 weeks! Hang in there!

Tori Anne, I am sorry - that does look painful :( But haha, I would love it if someone would bend my wire like that so my gap could be closed. I guess I am just a little impatient.

Dr. Rick, I think you have to be logged in to see the pics.

I have a small bend in between my two front teeth, nothing like yours though. Hope all goes well for you.

Ooh, tori*anne, I had those! One each side on the top wire. I think they're called "mushroom loop" wires (for obvious reasons). I think mine came ready-bent, rather than the ortho putting the loop in himself. I had them for several months, but then my progress has been slow and cautious throughout so your sentence might not be as long. They never really stopped getting hooked up on my top lip and I never managed to get wax to stay on them. But like everything else in this game you get used to them eventually. Hang in there :)

Thanks everyone for the well wishes!

It's supposed to be closing that huge-o gap. I keep checking the mirror religiously and it hasn't done a thing yet. Well it's only been 4 days. I'm not anxious or anything!?! :)

If it didn't continually poke me in the upper top lip area, it would be okay! Grrr! :x

I had those...my ortho called it a "t-loop". It hurt, but it WORKED! And quickly!

That's exactly it. There are a variety of different loops... "T", Helix, mushroom etc. They all work on the same basic principle. Pressure is exerted by pulling the wire apart on both ends of the "T". The wire has the tendency to want to close the "T", so it pull the teeth that are attached to wire along with it, whereby closing the space. They're not generally that much more uncomfortable than using powerchain to close the space. It just takes some time to get used to it :).

Thanks Dr. Tam! :)

I "googled" mushroom loop and found all kinds of stuff on it. Thankfully I only have a huge gap on that one side... :) And I'm getting used to it more and more... just like all the other junk in my mouth! :)
